unpopular opinion, but if he wanted the $400 one and you can't afford it, then get something totally different instead of the cheaper version. I'd never be as outwardly rude as your ex, but inside I'd be thinking this is worse than getting nothing. Now, when I do save up for the $400 machine, I can't get it because I'd have to very explicitly replace your gift, which would upset you.
