Conmen posing as Lokayukta sleuths blackmailing govt. officials

The Vidhana Soudha police are on the lookout for conmen, posing as senior officials of Lokayukta, who were allegedly blackmailing Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials with fake cases.Based on the complaint of Srikanth S., Police Inspector, Lokayukta, the Vidhana Soudha police registered an FIR charging the unknown accused under impersonation, extortion and cheating by impersonation under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on Monday for further investigation .The cheating came to light when the accused called the assistant executive engineer, BBMP, Mahadevapura zone, claiming to be Superintendent of Police and Additional Director General of Police Lokayukta on May 23. The caller informed her that there is a confidential report against her which is being probed and asked her to follow their instructions if she wanted the case to be dropped.The official approached the Lokayukta office for clarification and shared the mobile numbers used by the accused to call her. Further probe revealed that the accused had even called a retired executive engineer with the same claim and made an attempt to extort money.The accused are not only misusing the names of the officials but also tarnishing the image of the institution, the complainant stated.This is not the first such incident.
