Myles Garrett gives first verdict on Shedeur Sanders and Browns rookies as QB puts Joe Flacco on serious notice

Wait 5 sec.

Before Shedeur Sanders rocked up to ignite a quarterback battle in Cleveland, Myles Garrett was the talk of the town. The former Defensive Player of the Year, regarded as the top pass-rusher in the NFL, caused a stir at the end of a dismal 2024 season.Garrett requested a trade from the Browns before signing a huge new dealGettyGarrett released a statement in February confirming he had requested a trade from the Browns, who finished with a 3-14 record, citing a desire to challenge for and win Super Bowls. But after Cleveland’s front office expressed unwillingness to trade their star, the two parties agreed on a four-year, $160million contract extension, with $123.5m guaranteed and an average salary of $40m per year. The new deal makes Garrett one of the highest-paid non-quarterbacks in the NFL, and will keep him with the team through the 2030 season. Now he’s been paid, the 29-year-old will want the Browns start winning games, and believes their new rookies can help achieve that goal.Cleveland drafted Sanders, the highest-profile quarterback coming out of college in 2025, after he suffered an all-time slide to the fifth round.Ahead of him, with the 94th overall pick, the Browns selected a different signal caller in Dillon Gabriel. The pair join a quarterback room fronted by veteran Joe Flacco, who has returned for another stint in Cleveland for what will be his 19th NFL season.Kenny Pickett, who is entering his fourth year in the league, will also be battling for that starting QB spot.Meanwhile, $230m Deshaun Watson will be watching on from the sidelines, having suffered an Achilles injury setback that will likely see him miss much of the 2025 season. The Browns quarterback room is undoubtedly crowded, but Garrett believes there is enough talent in there to help kick-start an offense that struggled last year. The Browns have a crowded QB room, but Garrett is hopeful for the futureGettyGarrett was named the NFL’s DPOTY in 2023 and has cited a desire to win Super BowlsGettyUpon returning to minicamp, he got a decent look at Gabriel, and suggested all of the QBs looked calm in practice.“I only really saw Dillon today as far as getting reps in team,” Garrett said this week.“He looks composed. He’s running the offense pretty well. His eyes got pretty big when I got free and I was face up on him.“But all of them look pretty calm, just going through their checks, going through their calls, making the plays they need to make, not doing too much right now, and they’ll have time to continue to display their talents.“It’s just one day at a time. Continue to earn the trust of your coaches and your teammates, and I think they’ll be able to open up the game.”Flacco, with all his experience, is presumed the Week 1 starting quarterback for the Browns.Flacco is the presumed Week 1 starter, but Sanders is already impressing in practiceGettyNFL's highest-paid non-quarterbacksGarrett is one of the NFL's best paid stars, but who are the highest non-QB earners?10: D.K. Rookie Gabriel is 48 for 83, having thrown eight touchdowns and no interceptions. On those numbers, Flacco has a 51% completion rate, which is bettered by Gabriel’s 57%, Pickett’s 60% and Sanders’ 77%.While the stats don’t specify what conditions the quarterbacks were throwing under, or who they were throwing against, they suggest that Flacco might have a battle on his hands to hold that starting spot.It will certainly be interesting to see how the situation unfolds as the Browns build towards Week 1, where they will host the Cincinnati Bengals at Huntington Bank Field on Sunday, September 7.Stay up to date with the latest from the NFL across all platforms – follow our NFL Facebook page, subscribe to our talkSPORT End Zone YouTube channel for all the offseason news, interviews and more
