HUMANITARIAN OVERVIEWThe Sudanese refugee crisis in Wadi Fira province has reached a critical point due to a sharp increase in arrivals fleeing escalating violence in Sudan. According to the last UNHCR flash update published on 29 May 2025, over 70,492 refugees have crossed into Wadi Fira and Ennedi East provinces since the attack of Zamzam and Abou Shouk internally displaced persons (IDPs) camps in Sudan in mid-April 2025The refugees are arriving through three main entry points: Tine and Birak (in Wadi Fira province) and Oure Cassoni (Ennedi Est province).Since the beginning of the conflict in Sudan on 15 April 2023, and as of 8 June 8, 2025, the Chadian government, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have registered 856,783 refugees and 273,654 Chadian returnees. 61 per cent of the refugees and 68 per cent of the returnees are children under 18.Refugees report serious human rights violations, including physical and sexual violence, arbitrary detention, and forced recruitment. About 60 per cent have been separated from family members. The humanitarian situation is dire.Early June 2025 health officials reported a cholera outbreak in El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur, with 6 confirmed cases and 2 deaths. There is a high risk of the disease spreading to Chad through the Adré and Tiné entry points.
