It’s no secret that Disney has decided to go all-in on its live-action remakes. While the remakes technically began all the way back in 1994 with Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, Disney really started making live-action remakes a priority in 2015 with the remake of Cinderella. Since then, Disney has made nearly a dozen live-action remakes, including Beauty and the Beast (2017), Aladdin (2019), The Little Mermaid (2023), and Lilo & Stitch (2025).Disney also plans many live-action remakes in the near future. The Mouse House has announced remakes of Moana (2016), The Aristocats (1970), Hercules (1997), and Bambi (1942).Credit: DisneyRelated: Disney Reveals Gender-Swapped Cast for ‘Holes’ RemakeWhile some live-action remakes have been a hit with fans — like The Jungle Book (2016), Cinderella, and Lilo & Stitch — others have been fraught with controversy. While there were issues like Halle Bailey not being white in The Little Mermaid and the animals not having expressions in The Lion King (2019), perhaps there is no more controversial live-action remake than Disney’s Snow White, which was released on March 21, 2025.From Rachel Zegler’s casting to her constant criticism of the original story and Disney’s failure to cast actors from the little people community to play the dwarves, the movie seemed nearly doomed from the start. Disney was unable to combat these issues, and the movie was a massive flop, costing the studio more than $100 million.Credit: DisneyRelated: Disney Says Next Live-Action Remakes Are Best in Years Following ‘Snow White’ BombShortly after Snow White hit theaters and its box office failure was clear, Disney announced that it was pausing plans for its live-action Tangled remake. The remake was first announced back in December, with The Greatest Showman (2017) director Michael Gracey attached and Thor: Love and Thunder writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson working on a script. While it was disappointing to hear that Snow White was the reason for production on Tangled being halted, new reports indicate that the movie may still have some life behind the scenes.According to Disney insider Daniel Richtman, Disney may decide to revive the remake should its Moana live-action remake find success with audiences.Credit: DisneyRelated: Controversial Starlet Reveals ‘Tangled’ Live-Action AuditionThe live-action remake of Disney’s first Polynesian princess is scheduled to hit theaters on July 10, 2026.
