Attorney-at-Law and Opposition Member of Parliament Geeta Chandan Edmond has confirmed that she has resigned from the People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R), following her endorsement of President Irfaan Ali for a second term in office. In a statement on Saturday, Chandan Edmond clarified that her resignation was submitted on June 11, 2025, and that it includes her withdrawal from all roles and affiliations with the party, including her seat as a Member of Parliament.“My resignation letter addressed and sent to the PNC General Secretary was a formal resignation from all roles, affiliations, and obligations connected to the PNC,” she stated. The MP further confirmed that copies of her resignation were sent to former President David Granger, Head of the APNU+AFC list, and to Speaker of the National Assembly, Manzoor Nadir. She said she also took the time to explain the grounds for her decision in an email to Mr. Granger, thanking him for the opportunity to serve.Chandan Edmond’s resignation follows her break from the parliamentary opposition. During the final sitting of the 12th Parliament earlier this month, she rose from the floor of the National Assembly to endorse President Irfaan Ali and express her support for the ruling People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C).“As stated publicly on 2025-06-02, I wish to reiterate, I stand proudly, boldly and unapologetically with President Ali,” she declared in her latest statement. “I stand with his leadership, his vision and his steadfast commitment to our country.”She praised what she called “real change” under the PPP/C government—highlighting investments in infrastructure, social upliftment, and a renewed national pride. Her endorsement triggered sharp criticism from the opposition camp. Reports emerged that the APNU+AFC coalition was exploring steps to have her recalled from Parliament for crossing the floor. However, Chandan Edmond’s resignation pre-empts such actions. In the face of online abuse and accusations of betrayal, she said she has been targeted with racist and hateful statements as well as personal attacks.“It has not escaped my attention, the attempts to vilify me with racist, hateful and bigotry statements… aimed at character assassination,” she noted.Proudly invoking her working-class roots, she added, “I am a proud product of Chesney Albion—a sugar plantation area. We don’t just survive, we rise.”Geeta Chandan Edmond formerly served as General Secretary of the PNC/R and was once regarded as a key figure within the opposition party. The post Geeta Chandan Edmond says she resigned from PNC/R after endorsement of President Ali appeared first on News Room Guyana.
