HighlightsSudan continues to face a growing cholera outbreak, with 73,9981 suspected cases reported across 13 states since the outbreak was declared in August 2024. The highest burden remains concentrated in Khartoum, White Nile, Gedaref, Northern States, and South Darfur. The outbreak is exacerbated by a range of risk factors, including attacks on essential water and energy infrastructure and internal displacement. The situation is further compounded by limited preparedness and response measures, with supply gaps emerging due to constrained funding and challenges in timely resource mobilization. In alignment with the pillars of the Cholera Prevention and Response Plan:UNICEF WASH rapidly reinforced its prevention “phase 1” and decentralized WASH cluster coordination by deploying UNICEF staff, WASH extenders, and standby partners to hotspot locations. The WASH response further prioritized the rapid procurement and distribution of critical lifesaving WASH supplies to the most affected states, particularly Khartoum and other high-risk areas. WASH also activated its Long-Term Arrangement (LTAs) for Mobile Maintenance Crews to repair damaged water and energy infrastructure.UNICEF Health focused on early case identification, alerts, and treatment. UNICEF prioritized surveillance, early warning and response, ensuring access to treatment and controlling the spread of the disease. Given the fragile health system, the response focused on sustaining essential health services through frontline workers (FLWs), mobile teams, oral rehydration points (ORPs), and supporting the establishment and functioning of Cholera Treatment Centres (CTC).
