History was made at the Le Mans 24 Hours as Robert Kubica helped the No.83 Ferrari 499 win the iconic race.He becomes only the second driver this century to win it and also win a Formula 1 race.GettyKubica enters the history books with his Le Mans win in a customer Ferrari[/caption]Prior to the 93rd edition, only Aston Martin‘s Fernando Alonso had managed the feat. Now Polish driver Kubica joins him having won the Canadian Grand Prix in 2009 with BMW Sauber.Coincidentally, that is the same race taking place this weekend on the Formula 1 calendar. The 40-year-old, who also raced with Renault, Williams, and Alfa Romeo is also the first Pole to claim victory in the endurance race.He was joined in the customer Ferrari by Yifei Ye – the first Chinese driver to win it, and Brit racer Phil Hanson.Only the No.6 Penske Porsche 93 stopped it being a full Ferrari podium as they finished in second spot.It had looked like the No.51 works Ferrari was on course for victory but a spin cost them them 50 seconds with around four hours to go.It had also been thought team orders might have been called in to ensure a works car grabbed the win, but the Porsche’s response meant the Prancing Horse was unable to sort a swap.Kubica was the driver who got the No.83 over the line, taking the chequered flag 14.084 seconds ahead of his rival.“Winning Le Mans is special; it is one of the toughest races,” Kubica explained.GettyYe, Kubica, and Hanson celebrated in style on the podium at the Le Mans 24 hours[/caption]“I was very close a few years ago in LMP2 at my first Le Mans when we lost the race on the last lap, but this time, everything worked perfectly and winning overall is better than in LMP2.“It has been a demanding week, but fortunately, we made everything possible.“We kept our heads down. When we had to, we pushed, and we didn’t have to, we took care of the car, and of the tyres.“I’m happy for myself, for my teammates, for AF Corse and for Ferrari winning three times in a row with different crews, so I think a better scenario could not have happened.”Third spot on the podium went to the No.51, manned by Alessandro Pier Guidi, Antonio Giovinazzi and James Caladobut, only after the No.50 allowed them by in the latter stages. The historic victory comes 14 years after Kubica sustained ‘life-changing’ injuries in a 2011 Ronde di Andora Rally accident.AFPKubica suffered traumatic injuries while rallying in 2011[/caption]AFPKubica had to be freed from the wreckage of his rally car and suffered shocking injuries[/caption]In the crash, his right hand was partially severed while he also suffered fractures to his arms and legs after hitting the wall of a church. He needed seven hours of surgery after being airlifted to a hospital near Genoa having been trapped for one hour as specialist cutting equipment was needed to free him from the wreckage.A Renault driver at the time, he wouldn’t make a full-time return to Formula 1 until 2019 – eight years later, when he joined Williams to partner George Russell. In between the Formula 1 stints he continued to drive in the World Rally Championship, winning his first race back in late 2012 and winning the WRC 2 in 2013.
