An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred only 10 minutes ago 98 km east of Ishinomaki, Japan, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Ishinomaki, Ishinomaki Shi, Miyagi, Japan, early evening on Saturday, June 14th, 2025, at 7:46 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.2, Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) at magnitude 5.3, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.9, and Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) at magnitude 4.5.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Onagawa Cho (pop. 6,400) located 85 km from the epicenter, Rikuzen-Takata (pop. 18,300) 97 km away, Ofunato (pop. 35,500) 98 km away, Ishinomaki (pop. 138,500) 98 km away, and Tome (pop. 77,900) 116 km away.VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.Earthquake data: Date & time: Jun 14, 2025 07:46 pm (GMT +9) local time (14 Jun 2025 10:46 GMT)Magnitude: 5.0Depth: 35.00 kmEpicenter latitude / longitude: 38.46°N / 142.15°E (Japan)Primary data source: EMSC
