Ram along with various officials visited government schools across the state to welcome students on the first day of the academic year.Speaking to The Indian Express after visiting Sant Ramdas School in Pandav Nagar, Ram said, “I know that students (in PMC schools) belong to weaker sections and their parents are happy about the fact that their kids are in school. But I believe the standard of teaching should be much much higher because I am not very satisfied with the quality of teaching,” referring to civic schools in the city.He added, “We have to do capacity building for teachers first. Then we have to ensure quality education, the students should be doing well in terms of general knowledge and knowledge of specific subjects. The third is infrastructure. Though they are having nice buildings, but inside the building things are not up to the mark. We will think about this.” Meetings with the educational officer would take place in the next few weeks to address the issues, he said.Pune Divisional Commissioner Dr Chandrakant Pulkundwar encouraged students to enroll in Zilla Parishad (ZP) schools while speaking at the ZP School in Nighoje in Khed taluka. He said that many officials had completed their primary education in ZP schools, and that he himself was a student of such a school. Quality facilities were available in these ZP schools, he said.Chief Executive Officer of Pune Zila Parishad Gajanan Patil said the overall progress of a school is the joint responsibility of the school, parents of students, and villagers.Soham is a Correspondent with the Indian Express in Pune.
