With hundreds of flights already operating across the globe, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has further expanded its service by offering non-stop flights between Guyana and the Netherlands, commencing on June 4, 2025.The airline will operate the new route twice weekly—on Wednesdays and Saturdays—utilising an Airbus A330-200 aircraft.Through this new route, passengers will have access to 21 destinations in the United Kingdom and over 140 other destinations beyond Amsterdam.KLM Royal Dutch Airlines officially launched its presence in Guyana on Tuesday night during a ceremony held at the Cara Lodge Hotel in Georgetown. In his remarks, President Dr Irfaan Ali described the connection as one of the most prestigious hubs in the world, which opens up significant opportunities not only for passengers but also for the economy.“We don’t see KLM as an investor. We see KLM as a partner in Guyana and it is our duty to help you make your stay here successful.“It is our duty to ensure that we create policies and programmes and we pursue policies and programmes and investment that will make your investment here sustainable and profitable. You must be profitable, that’s the bottom line,” President Ali said. The addition of the new flight, President Ali said, will also enhance Guyana’s ability to transport products more efficiently throughout the region.“Your presence is more than an endorsement of our growing economy. It is a vote of confidence in our stability, our infrastructure and vision for the future,” he said.Noting that passenger traffic has significantly increased over the years, President Ali said the current focus is on building a mechanism that will support 3 million people passing through the economy by 2030.To support this, he noted the need for an ecosystem that can facilitate such expansion. To this end, President Ali disclosed that the authorities are currently in the final stages of signing off on Terminal 2 at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, as the existing terminal is already “inadequate.”“The infrastructure that we are putting in place is to make the central hub all the connecting services within a 35-minute radius.“This is not driving a race car or pulling up in a fancy car. This is real policy making… Understanding how a policy-making environment works,” President Ali said.KLM promises to offer hassle-free flights and top-notch customer service to passengers.Dirk Buitelaar, KLM Regional Manager, said the move is historic, as it is the airline’s first route to a South American nation.“The launch of the flight is more than just a new destination. It’s a symbol of connection between Europe and South America, between the Netherlands and Guyana, between commerce and culture and most importantly between people,” Buitelaar said. The route, he noted, reflects Guyana’s long-standing tradition of pioneering aviation.“As Guyana experiences remarkable growth… KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is proud to be a bridge for business, tourism and diplomatic opportunities.“Our commitment is not just about flying an aircraft between our two cities. It’s about stimulating economies coming together, bringing industries and nations closer in order to grow,” Buitelaar said.Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Suriname and Guyana, Walter Oostelbos, in his remarks, described the milestone as a “major step” forward for Guyana’s connectivity.“You have used the development in the oil and gas sector to open your country to foreign investors.“So the new route between the Netherlands and Georgetown is therefore not only a milestone for KLM but also a major step forward for the connectivity to your country with Europe,” he said.KLM Royal Dutch Airlines’ inaugural flight is scheduled to land at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport on Wednesday afternoon. The post ‘Connecting people & culture’ – KLM Royal Dutch Airlines now offering non-stop flights to the Netherlands appeared first on News Room Guyana.
