Police obtained a three-day remand for further investigation.A man allegedly strangled his wife to death after she stopped him from gambling at Jeerakh village of Malaud in Khanna Sub-Division late on Monday, police said Tuesday.The 38-year-old victim, Paramjit Kaur, married Lakhvir Singh around a decade ago, and the couple has two daughters together, aged 6 and 2 years, police said.The victim’s brother Kuldeep Singh told police that Lakhvir had a severe gambling addiction.Kuldeep told police, “Lakhvir would lose money in gambling daily. To keep peace at home, Paramjit would often borrow money from her parents to give to her husband to save herself from physical abuse.”Kuldeep said, “Despite her best efforts, things only got worse. Lakhvir lost lakhs of rupees in gambling. Lakhvir mortgaged their house, jewellery, and even a motorcycle. On June 2, a heated argument ensued when Lakhvir asked for money to gamble, and Paramjit refused. Enraged, he strangled her with a rope.”“After the murder, Lakhvir placed her body on a cot and covered it with a bedsheet to make it appear as if she was asleep. Suspicious neighbours, however, alerted Paramjit’s family. When her relatives arrived, they noticed strangulation marks around her neck and immediately informed the police,” police said.DSP (Payal) Hemant Malhotra said, “A murder case has been registered against Lakhvir Singh based on Kuldeep’s statement. The body was handed over to the family after the postmortem.”Police arrested Lakhvir Singh for his wife’s murder.Story continues below this adThe DSP said, “Lakhvir had taken loans amounting to Rs 3.5 lakh from several sources in his wife’s name and lost all the money in gambling. His wife frequently asked him to repay the loan, which led to frequent arguments. On June 2, one such fight escalated into murder. Lakhvir tried to stage the death as a suicide by leaving the rope around her neck, but police investigated and found she was murdered.”The DSP added that Lakhvir confessed to his crime.
