Alpha Unmanned Systems and Airbus Helicopters España have signed a collaboration agreement to push forward the integration of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into manned helicopter operations. The partnership focuses on developing joint operational concepts and technologies to enable manned-unmanned teaming in defense and security missions.Alpha Unmanned Systems CEO Eric Freeman called the agreement “a key step toward integrating tactical UAVs into next-generation helicopter operations.”The deal builds on recent joint exercises with the Spanish Army, including live demonstrations at the 2E+I Forum in Toledo last October. In those exercises, Alpha’s A900 UAVs flew alongside Airbus H135 helicopters from the Spanish Air Force, with crews directly piloting the drones from the helicopter cockpits. This setup showcased the interoperability and potential advantages of combined manned and unmanned operations.“We are convinced that the synergy between helicopters and drones is essential for improving security and expanding functionalities,” said Luis Martín Díaz, Head of Customers and Programs at Airbus Helicopters España.Alpha A900Central to this collaboration is the Alpha A900, an unmanned helicopter developed by Alpha Unmanned Systems.Built for versatility and durability, the A900 is designed to perform in both maritime and land-based missions. With a maximum takeoff weight of under 25 kilograms (55 pounds), it meets STANAG 4738 standards, ensuring compliance with military and security force requirements. The A900 cruises at speeds between 32 and 54 knots (60 to 100 kilometers/37 to 62 miles per hour) and is powered by a 100cc two-stroke boxer engine. An onboard generator delivers up to 150W to support mission payloads. It can carry a range of payloads, including EO/IR cameras, LiDAR, and maritime AIS radar. The drone is equipped with redundant critical systems, GPS-denied navigation, and automatic vertical takeoff and landing capabilities from moving platforms, such as naval vessels.Madrid-based Alpha Unmanned Systems’ rotary UAVs, including the A900 and Alpha 800, are in operation in more than a dozen countries, with users including the US Department of Defense, the Spanish Armed Forces, the Hellenic Navy, and the Indonesian Coast Guard. The post Alpha Unmanned Systems, Airbus Collaborate on Manned-Unmanned Teaming appeared first on The Defense Post.
