Comcast’s Universal Destinations & Experiences is expanding at a rapid rate, and new information continues to be revealed for one major industry-changing project.Credit: Inside the MagicUniversal is expanding on multiple fronts in the United States. Orlando recently celebrated the opening of Universal’s Epic Universe, a sprawling new park with lands themed to Nintendo, How to Train Your Dragon, and the Classic Monsters. Elsewhere, Universal Kids Resort is taking shape in Frisco, Texas, and Universal Horror Unleashed is set to bring thrills to Las Vegas, Nevada. In a fresh announcement last month, the horror-focused experience has also been confirmed for Chicago, Illinois. But it’s not all about the United States.Credit: LunchboxLarry, FlickrUniversal Destinations & Experiences has officially confirmed its interest in bringing an all-new entertainment destination to the United Kingdom. In a letter shared publicly on June 25, 2025, the company outlined its ambitious vision for a major resort in Bedfordshire, including “a world-class theme park with several themed lands, visitor accommodation, as well as a range of retail, dining and entertainment uses.”The proposed development promises to make a significant impact not only on the town of Bedford but across the UK economy. According to Universal, the resort is projected to bring in nearly £50 billion in economic benefit and create 28,000 jobs. Once open, the complex would be one of the largest employers in the region, with 80% of the workforce expected to come from Bedford, Central Bedfordshire, Luton, and Milton Keynes.Credit: UniversalThis latest update builds on the growing momentum surrounding the project, which first came to public attention just over a year ago. At the time, Universal launched a dedicated website offering aerial imagery of the land and an FAQ section that acknowledged the early stage of exploration. The company made clear it had acquired the Bedford-area property and was evaluating its feasibility for “a potential resort and park experience.”Local engagement has played a key role in the process. Universal reported that in 2024, thousands of residents took part in consultations, with an impressive 92% expressing support for the project. In line with its stated values, the company has worked to keep nearby communities informed every step of the way.Credit: Inside the MagicNew documents show the resort’s potential impact on communities, including the types of nighttime experiences it will offer. The report shows that fireworks will not be performed nightly at Universal UK.The document states, “No more than 10 Fireworks shows are permitted each year.” It goes on to say, “at least five of which would take place on or around the events of Chinese New Year, 5th November, Diwali, or New Year’s Eve, which may be after 11 p.m.”The report seemingly confirms what will replace entertainment outside those special events: drones. The report outlines that drone clearance of 50 meters has been requested, confirming that drones won’t be used outside of Universal-owned property.Credit: UniversalUniversal UK: How It All BeganA letter sent to residents emphasized Universal’s awareness of environmental considerations, noting, “Theme parks create thousands of jobs and generate significant positive economic impact, both locally and further afield,” while also affirming its commitment to “enhancing natural beauty and protecting the ecology of the areas where we operate.”The conversation around Universal’s possible UK expansion began to shift in late 2023, when local publication Bedford Independent confirmed that Comcast—the parent company of Universal Destinations & Experiences—had purchased land in Bedfordshire. The story echoed earlier findings from Orlando Park Stop, which first spotlighted the company’s international ambitions.Credit: UniversalUniversal also stated in its outreach to the Bedford Independent, “We support Bedford’s vision of becoming a prosperous place to live, work, and visit, and we take a proactive approach to partnering with local communities and stakeholders, like Bedford Borough Council, when pursuing potential projects.”While the resort’s themes and attractions remain under wraps, speculation among fans continues to thrive. Some have imagined lands based on beloved franchises such as James Bond, Back to the Future, Lord of the Rings, and Paddington—though Universal has yet to confirm any such details.Credit: MGM/EON ProductionsThe Bedfordshire resort would become part of a growing global portfolio that includes destinations like Universal Studios Japan, Universal Studios Singapore, Universal Studios Hollywood, Universal Orlando Resort, and Universal Beijing Resort. Comcast has been steadily investing in its themed entertainment division, reporting $271 million in new land acquisitions in 2023 alone. For those eager to follow the project’s evolution, the Universal UK Project website offers a central hub for news, FAQs, and ongoing community updates. As Universal continues its thoughtful approach to expansion, this venture could become a new model for how large-scale themed resorts are introduced to new regions. The Universal UK resort could also affect the tourism Disney Experiences gets from U.K. visitors at its Disneyland Paris destination, especially if the offer includes many of the aforementioned franchises. How do you feel about no nightly fireworks at this new Universal resort?
