Church staff averts mass shootout in US’ Michigan after man with handgun, rifle shot dead

(AP Photo/Paul Sancya)A man opened fire outside a Michigan church which was filled with worshippers on Sunday, before being struck by a vehicle and then fatally shot by security staff who potentially averted a mass shooting incident, police stated.At an evening press briefing, police Chief Ryan Strong said that church goers witnessed a man driving recklessly and then stopping his car near the church before getting out with a handgun and a rifle while wearing a tactical vest. The man started firing as soon as he got near the church, hitting one person in his leg.Police chief Strong said “A parishioner struck the gunman with his vehicle as the gunman shot the vehicle repeatedly. (AP Photo/Paul Sancya)The police chief further added that the motive of the 31-year-old white man, who had no connection to the church, remains unclear. Strong, however, clarified that the man was suffering from a mental health crisis.The shooting took place in the city of Wayne, which is located about 25 miles (40 kilometers) west of Detroit. Wayne houses around 17,000 people. The person who was shot in the leg by the gunman was treated for non-life threatening injuries while no one else was injured in the shootout, police added.A church member drove his car over the suspect which eventually gave the security staff time to get ready and shoot the gunman down. “We are grateful for the heroic actions of the church’s staff members, who undoubtedly saved many lives and prevented a large-scale mass shooting,” the police chief said.Since the church holds a worship service on Sundays at 10:45am, according to church’s website, hence about 150 people were present inside the the building and it could have been a mass shooting incident if not for the security staff over powering the suspect.Stay updated with the latest - Click here to follow us on Instagram© IE Online Media Services Pvt LtdTags:MichiganUS shooting
