Before Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla's recent achievement, Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma made history as the first Indian in space. He spent over seven days aboard the Salyut 7 space station as part of a joint ISRO-Soviet Interkosmos program. Selected in 1982, Sharma launched on Soyuz T-11 in 1984 with Soviet cosmonauts.
