Coco Gauff stunned by qualifier in first match since French Open victory as Wimbledon preparation takes huge hit

Wait 5 sec.

Coco Gauff was beaten in straight sets at the Berlin Open by qualifier Wang Xinyu on Thursday afternoon. The World No.2 headed into the tournament in Germany in brilliant form having won the French Open earlier this month.Gauff was knocked out in the last 16 in a major upsetGettyHowever, in her first match since that major win, she was stunned by Wang, who claimed the biggest victory of her career.Wang won 6-3, 6-3, coming out on top in four straight games to win the first set and then five in a row to claim the second. The Chinese star had only ever beaten an opponent in the top five of the world rankings twice before overcoming Gauff. Her previous two wins against such players both came against Jessica Pegula during the 2024 season. She has now reached her first-ever grass event quarter-final while also picking up her first win over a top 10 opponent in 2025.Gauff landed just 41 per cent of her first serves and hit seven double faults, as her return to grass ended disappointingly. With Wimbledon getting started on June 30, the American would have hoped to have built on her French Open win. But instead, Wang, who is ranked 49th in the world, dealt her a shock loss and she bowed out in Berlin at the first hurdle. Speaking after knocking Gauff out of the Berlin Open, she said: “After winning the first set, I just said to myself, ‘I’m playing the Roland Garros champion and I won the first set.’ It’s time to enjoy it, no matter what happens in the second or third set. Gauff would have wanted to build on her French Open winGettyHer eyes will now be on SW19, despite her preparations taking a hit.Gauff has never reached the final at Wimbledon, slipping up in the fourth round three times in her five appearances. Last year, she was beaten by Emma Navarro in straight sets.
