In a move to free up valuable government land, the Chandigarh Administration has announced an anti-encroachment drive targeting Adarsh Colony in sectors 53–54. The operation, scheduled for Thursday, aims to reclaim approximately 12 acres of government-owned land for public utility infrastructure, in line with the master plan. The long-standing slum, established nearly 20 years ago near the Furniture Market, occupies around six acres and consists of approximately 800 makeshift dwellings. The encroached land is estimated to be valued at Rs 250 crore.A preparatory meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav brought together senior officials to ensure a coordinated and lawful operation. SSP Kanwardeep Kaur confirmed the deployment of about 1,000 personnel with proper barricading and security arrangements to maintain public order. The Engineering Department has arranged necessary machinery — JCBs, dumpers, and other equipment — while the Health Department has mobilised six ambulances, medical staff, and sanitation teams to provide on-site emergency support.“All departments have been directed to work in seamless coordination, ensuring essential services are uninterrupted and strict safety protocols are followed,” said DC Yadav. After this demolition, only one slum — Shahpur Colony in Sector 38—will remain, housing around 300 shanties across four acres (land worth approximately Rs 150 crore). This operation follows the successful reclamation of other colonies: Janta Colony (Sector 25, May 6) with about 10 acres reclaimed and valued at Rs 350 crore; and over 1,000 makeshift structures in Sanjay Colony (Industrial Area Phase 1, April 24), covering approximately six acres.Story continues below this adChandigarh’s campaign to eliminate slums dates back to the early 2000s, with the launch of the Chandigarh Small Flats Scheme in 2006. Since then, multiple colonies have been demolished, including Colony No. 5 in 2013 and Colony No. 4 in 2022, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to urban regeneration and planned development.Stay updated with the latest - Click here to follow us on Instagram© The Indian Express Pvt Ltd
