Early Pregnancy Unit Opens At Mater Dei Hospital

Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela has announced the opening of the Early Pregnancy Unit at Mater Dei Hospital, set up to support individuals who experience miscarriage or complications during early pregnancy.“At Mater Dei Hospital, the need was strongly felt for a dedicated unit for those suffering pregnancy loss. The Government has listened to the public and understood the demand to establish this service,” said Minister Abela.The Minister explained that in Malta, approximately three people per day experience miscarriage, with around 400 patients admitted to Mater Dei Hospital each year as a result. He stated that this new unit will cater for up to eight patients at a time for closer monitoring and care. The facility will also include an outpatient clinic for individuals experiencing recurrent pregnancy loss.Minister Abela further explained that the unit will be run by a team of 20 trained professionals, including nurses and midwives. Following comprehensive training for staff, the unit is set to begin operations next week.“I am confident that the Early Pregnancy Unit will not only fulfil its intended purpose, but will also prove vital for individuals who unfortunately suffer a miscarriage.
