Outgoing PN leader Bernard Grech offered a few words of advice to his successor and promised to support whoever is elected to the role no matter what political direction they take.Grech started by urging the new leader to involve the party in their decision-making process.“The new leader must be conscious that it is a political party which forms a government, and no one else,” he said. “The new leader must ensure that the PN’s politics and strategy emanate from the party, and the party alone.” View this post on InstagramA post shared by Lovin Malta (@lovinmalta)In what is being interpreted as a dig at European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, Grech said the new leader should prioritise the party and nation above all personal ambitions.“When the party and nation calls you, the leader must roll up their sleeves and take on the role for the sake of the nation instead of looking at their own personal calendar,” he said.“You must elect a leader who is there to serve the party, and not one who gets served by the party.”Grech went on to say that the new leader must listen to and value everyone but ultimately take the lead themselves.“We don’t need a game of musical chairs but an orchestra with a conductor who listens to everyone and ultimately leads themselves.”He also said that while the party must remember its past successes, it cannot get lost in them.“We must all help the new leader give birth to a new dream that reflects what people expect from us,” he said.Grech said that the new leader must prioritise the national interest over the party’s interests, and that people must view them as a better and more credible Prime Minister than Robert Abela.“Dear future leader, the party is greater than any single individual,” he concluded.“We are called a party because we can only succeed if we work together. Whoever you are, you will find me by your side in all steps we must climb together.”“Dear future leader, I want you to win, because if you win, then Malta, the PN and the team will win with you. We will win together.”•
