(AP Photo/File)The Pentagon has halted the shipment of missiles and ammunition destined for Ukraine amid concerns that its own stockpiles have plunged too much, reports quoting US officials stated on Tuesday. The order to pause the weapons shipment to Ukraine was reportedly passed by Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and it comes weeks after he issued a memo ordering the inspection of US stockpile of munitions, which has declined after sending weapons to Ukraine for years in order to defend against Russia, and nearly two years of military operation in the Middle East as US fought against Houthi rebels in Yemen and defended Israel and allies against Iranian threats. The munitions were promised to be delivered to Ukraine under former President Joe Biden’s tenure for use during its ongoing war with Russia, but a pause by the Trump administration suggests a new set of priorities have come in.Confirming the development, White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said “This decision was made to put America’s interests first following a (Defense Department) review of our nation’s military support and assistance to other countries across the globe.”Kelly, while referring to recent US strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites, added “The strength of the United States Armed Forces remains unquestioned — just ask Iran,” Associated Press reported. An NBC News report, quoting two defense officials and two congressional officials, stated that the pause on weapons supply to Ukraine could be held up until the review of the stockpile is complete. The officials said that if the munitions are in short supply or needed in some other part of the world, then Ukraine would have to wait longer.Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the United States has provided more than $66 billion worth of weapons to Kyiv. Washington, over the course of war, has also urged its allies to provide air defense systems to Ukraine.Stay updated with the latest - Click here to follow us on Instagram© IE Online Media Services Pvt LtdTags:PentagonRussia Ukraine Crisis
