Lee Westwood fought through jet lag and a lack of sleep to qualify for The Open at Final Qualifying on Tuesday evening. The former World No.1 and British golfing legend won his 36-hole event at Dundonald Links, finishing seven under par.Westwood has qualified for The OpenGettyWith the success, Westwood claimed a spot at the final major of the season and ended his long drought in the process. He hadn’t played at a major event since The Open in 2022, missing out or not trying to qualify for them over the last two years. But he doesn’t have to worry about that now, as the 52-year-old will be teeing it up as part of the field at Royal Portrush on July 17.To make the moment even more rewarding for the LIV Golf star, it took an extra special effort from him to qualify.Westwood and other players from the LIV tour had only flown into Scotland for the event from Texas on Monday night as they had been competing at LIV Golf Dallas over the weekend. It meant that Westwood hadn’t slept much at all and he revealed that he only saw the course for the first time on Monday.Speaking about his crazy build-up after he qualified for The Open, he said when asked how he felt: “Good. Well, tired.“It’s been a while since I’ve played 36 holes in a day and didn’t really give myself the best chance, really. Got wet the last four holes. Good old Scotland raining on me there! So the first time I played it was this morning.“I only made my mind up last week really. I only had an hour and a half sleep last night as well. So if I collapse, then you’ll know why. “Yeah, it’s a strange route, isn’t it? Dallas to Dundonald.”Westwood overcame his strange circumstances to book a spot in a golf major for the first time since the 2022 Open.At that tournament at St. Andrews, he finished tied for 34th.Westwood will be back playing at a major for the first time since 2022GettyDespite not playing any majors over the last few years though, Westwood continues to challenge on the LIV Tour.He finished T10 in Virginia in June while also having two T25 finishes in Dallas and Riyadh this season. The veteran is now looking forward to returning to the big stage and especially to Royal Portrush, where he finished fourth previously.Westwood said: “I’ve always said it [The Open] is the greatest championship in golf and as a British player you get phenomenal support. “I really enjoyed Portrush last time. I finished fourth and played nicely. I’m just looking forward to enjoying the week at Portrush, seeing a few old friends and enjoying that golf course. “For me, it’s in the top three links courses in the British Isles.”Poulter Sr. and Jr. both sadly failed to qualify along with WestwoodGettyWestwood is one of multiple LIV stars to have qualified, including Dean Burmester and Lucas Herbert, who won their events too.But Ian Poulter and his son Luke both missed out on The Open. Poulter Sr. and Jr. were competing at Cinque Ports in the Final Qualifying, but neither of them made it.The Open will get started on Thursday, July 17 and comes to an end on Sunday, July 20.Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and J.J. Spaun have all won a major this year.
