Each time I fling open the doors of my closet to pick an outfit, I’m deciding how the world sees me, as well as how I see myself. Of course, I want to look effortlessly cool. But I also want to feel confident in my choices, knowing that my clothing consumption is slow, purposeful, and mindful of environmental and social impact.I strive to be intentional in my approach to building and maintaining a wardrobe. I try to stay away from trends (though let’s face it, nobody’s perfect, and chunky loafers are really cute). Instead of buying fast fashion, I save up to invest in higher-quality pieces or shop secondhand. (Is there a greater thrill than finding a gem hiding in the racks at a thrift store?)This consideration doesn’t end at the point of purchase. Taking proper care of my cherished pieces once I bring them home is just as important — from how I launder them to how I store them. My clothes are not disposable, and neither are the hangers that I put them on.
