Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.3. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 4.0, The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) at magnitude 4.2, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.1.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.In Arkesini (pop. 110) located 14 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.Weak shaking might have been felt in Fira (pop. 2,400) located 39 km from the epicenter, Oia (pop. 3,400) 40 km away, Messaria (pop. 1,200) 40 km away, Ios (pop. 2,000) 41 km away, Emporeio (pop. 1,900) 44 km away, Filotion (pop. 1,500) 48 km away, and Naxos (pop. 7,100) 58 km away.VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. It hit 9 minutes after the mainshock in 1 km (0.6 mi) distance. When more aftershocks are detected, we will update this section. What are aftershocks?Larger earthquakes (above magnitude 5 or so) such as this one are usually followed by smaller ones known as aftershocks that occur in the same area during the days, weeks, months or even years after the main shock.[More info]What about this quake?Based on its magnitude, the fault that was active during the quake likely ruptured beneath a surface area of approximately 1 km2 (0 square miles) as a first-order estimate. The length of the rupture zone thus was probably around 2 km (1 mi).[More info]Recorded aftershocks, latest first (1 quake)Jul 3, 2025 02:34 am (GMT +3)4 minutes ago9 minutes after main shock2.26.4 km1 km (0.6 mi)SW of main shock38 km NE of Oia, Nomos Kykladon, South Aegean, GreeceMoreJul 3, 2025 02:25 am (Athens)13 minutes ago - felt4.18.7 km0 km - This quakeAegean Sea, 24 km SW of Nisi Amorgos Island, GreeceMain Shock (this quake)MoreMap of aftershocksEarthquake statisticsAverage number of earthquakesBased on data from the past 55 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 3,000 quakes on average per year in the area near the epicenter of this quake (within 100 km/61 mi):Mag. 6 or higher: 0.03 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 31.3 years)Mag. 5 or higher: 0.39 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 2.6 years)Mag. 4 or higher: 40 quakes per year (or 3.3 quakes per month)Mag. 3 or higher: 332 quakes per year (or 27.7 quakes per month)Mag. 2 or higher: 1,700 quakes per year (or 4.5 quakes per day)Mag. 1 or higher: 3,000 quakes per year (or 8.2 quakes per day)The area where this quake occurred has a high level of seismic activity.
