How safe are women? In recent days there have been reports of sexual assault in Udaipur, Rajasthan and Delhi. The first case involved a 30-year-old French tourist in India. The second case, in East Delhi, involved a woman being molested by a patient in a government hospital. And now, one has a report of an alleged case of rape at a law college in Kolkata. These incidents are deeply concerning and raise serious questions about our system. Society demands firm assurances from those in power that the safety of women will be taken seriously, as they are clearly at risk even in health-care institutions. Citizens need to push the government to reassure women that they will be safe at all times.Yagyesh Shukla,Mahoba, Uttar PradeshâIntensive revisionâ of rollsThe sudden and quick move by the Election Commission of India for âintensive revision of electoral rolls in Biharâ (Front page, June 29), creates the perception that a large-scale manipulation of voter rolls is underway to exclude a minority community, Dalits and poor migrant workers.
