The animated classic The Land Before Time (1988), directed by Don Bluth and executive produced by Steven Spielberg (Jurassic Park) and George Lucas (Star Wars), is getting a reboot of sorts from British filmmaker Joey Lever (2014’s fan film Spider-Man: Lost Cause). While it isn’t an official project, Littlefoot (TBA) will faithfully re-create the film’s beloved dinosaur characters, such as Littlefoot, Cera, Ducky, Petrie, and Spike, using 3D animation.Earlier this year, Lever cast 11-year-old Brit Summer-Joules as Littlefoot, and Larissa Loeffler as Littlefoot’s mother, now dubbed “Mama Longneck”. In the original 1988 film, Littlefoot and his mother were voiced by Gabriel Damon and Helen Shaver respectively.Credit: Universal Pictures / Amblin EntertainmentNow, Lever has shared some first-look images of the remake’s dinosaurs on his social media.“Welcome back to The Land Before Time” Lever writes in the post before listing all the iconic dinosaur characters, including the villain Sharptooth, along with their descriptions:Cera – Fierce, stubborn, and full of fire. But there’s warmth under all that.Daddy Topps – Strong. Stern. Scared of change. His size hides deeper fears.Ducky & Spike – Joy and gentleness. Ducky’s bubbly energy meets Spike’s quiet love.Littlefoot – Soft, curious, brave. A quiet leader with heart.Petrie – Nervous and scrappy, with more feathers and more flapping than ever.Mama Longneck – Gentle strength in every movement. Her eyes will break you.Sharptooth – A silent force of nature. No words. Just dread.Related: Universal Studios Great Britain Could Drop ‘Jurassic World’ for ‘The Land Before Time’“It’s taken over a year to get these characters just right and every detail matters,” Lever continues, before citing Disney’s 2019 The Lion King remake as a film whose “photorealistic” designs he wanted to avoid, instead choosing to honor the “expressiveness” and the “emotional magic” of the original 1988 film. “We didn’t want to go down the hyper-realistic route you see in modern reboots (a certain Lion King). Instead, we leaned into what made the original characters timeless: their expressiveness, charm, and stylised beauty.”“We’ve spent months shaping their personalities through texture, shape, movement, and color. Every scar, shadow, and smile is designed to pull you back into the emotional magic of @donbluthstudios and @stukrieger world while reimagining it for today.”Credit: Universal Studios / Amblin EntertainmentLever makes a solid argument where The Lion King (2019) is concerned.Fans have been wondering whether The Land Before Time will ever undergo the same treatment and get the “photorealistic” upgrade Disney gave its own 1994 animated classic. But, despite grossing over $1.6 billion worldwide, 2019’s The Lion King remake faced criticism from audiences due to its characters being unable to emote like their 1994 2D-animated counterparts.A Land Before Time remake more along the lines of a Pixar movie, which Lever’s upcoming film certainly looks to be channeling based on the new character designs alone, would lend to the original 1988 film’s highly emotive characters well. For updates on Littlefoot, visit Joey Lever‘s YouTube channel.
