Match Report: Ipswich Town 1-4 Tottenham -Three straight Premier League wins for Ange Postecoglou

Wait 5 sec.

Tottenham Hotspur won their third consecutive Premier League game away at Portman Road, beating Ipswich Town 4-1.Spurs avenged their 2-1 defeat in the reverse fixture at home, and despite a nervy start, this was the best of Ange Postecoglou’s side we’ve seen in weeks.Tottenham made three changes for the match away to Ipswich, with Destiny Udogie, Archie Gray, and Brennan Johnson coming into the starting XI. Pedro Porro and Ben Davies dropped to the bench, while James Maddison missed out after picking up a knock against Manchester United. The Spurs boss would have been delighted with the depth available to him on the bench.First half: Ipswich Town 1-2 Tottenham HotspurIt was a nervy start for the away side, with Ipswich largely in control for the first 15-20 minutes. Liam Delap troubled Vicario and the Spurs defence from the first minute, and Ipswich continued to catch Spurs players off guard. But once they settled in, they were the better side when it came to taking their chances. It took just 18 minutes for them to strike, with Brennan Johnson opening the scoring. Archie Gray launched a long ball to Heung-Min Son, who dribbled past Ben Godfrey before laying it on a plate for Johnson to tap in. A Brennan Johnson classic.Just eight minutes later, the Son-Johnson duo combined again. Rodrigo Bentancur played Son through with a perfectly weighted pass, and the Spurs skipper rolled it across for Johnson to fire home his second of the night. Godfrey was having an absolute nightmare, and Son was enjoying every bit of it.Ten minutes before half-time, the home side pulled one back. Kevin Danso lost possession on the edge of the box, and Jack Clarke smartly pulled it back for Hutchinson, who finished superbly past Vicario.Despite Spurs leading, it was a fairly balanced first 45 minutes. Had it not been for Johnson’s brace, Ipswich might have been the better side.Photo by HENRY NICHOLLS/AFP via Getty ImagesSecond half: Ipswich Town 1-4 Tottenham HotspurSpurs have dropped the most points from winning positions in the Premier League this season, so the pressure was on to avoid another collapse.Ipswich thought they had equalised 15 minutes into the second half, but VAR came to Tottenham’s rescue, ruling the goal out for offside. Shortly after, Johnson had an opportunity to complete his hat-trick, but Leif Davis blocked his effort.Archie Gray, who had struggled against Delap in the first half, looked far more settled now, keeping him quiet. Meanwhile, James Maddison replaced Johnson 30 minutes into the second half and made an instant impact.Djed Spence, the man of the moment, had been quiet on the right, but shifted to the left once Pedro Porro replaced Udogie; that change made a good difference. In the 77th minute, Maddison dribbled through the Ipswich defence before sliding it to Spence, whose shot deflected off Luke Woolfenden and went over the keeper. Spurs had their two-goal cushion back. With six minutes left, Spurs struck again. Dane Scarlett flicked a header into Dejan Kulusevski’s path, and the Swede made no mistake in cutting inside from the right and curling in off the post to make it 1-4.Tottenham Hotspur takeawaysSpurs have their midfield. It’s been said before, but it’s becoming clearer with each game. Lucas Bergvall was outstanding despite not getting a goal contribution, reading the game well and making four recoveries. Bentancur had some loose passes early on but grew into the game, while Maddison’s impact was immediate. This trio could be the long-term answer for Spurs.Time for Spence to get an England call-up? Spence started on the right, while Udogie slotted back in at left-back. Udogie linked up brilliantly with Son, arguably better than Spence, but that’s the nature of these two left-backs. Udogie prefers overlapping runs, while Spence likes linking with midfielders. However, when Spence moved to the left, he was back at his best and even bagged his first Premier League goal. He made five recoveries and won all his tackles; surely Thomas Tuchel is watching?Centre-backs: Ange Postecoglou took a risk starting Gray over Davies especially after the Davies-Danso pairing kept a clean sheet against Manchester United. However, it worked well. Gray struggled early on but improved later. Danso was solid again, aside from the one moment where he lost possession before Ipswich’s goal. With Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero set to return soon, Spurs have some big decisions to make. The attack: Son was unplayable in the first half; so much so that Kieran McKenna had to sub off Ipswich’s left-back at half-time. Spurs have lost multiple chances this season because no one was in the box to finish crosses. This is exactly what Johnson brings. His late runs into the box create easy scoring chances, even when he isn’t very much involved in the game. Two classic poacher’s goals today. Meanwhile, Mathys Tel struggled with the physicality of the Premier League again, but there’s time for him to adapt. What’s next for Spurs? This is how good Spurs can be with their key players fit. And let’s not forget, they are still without both first-choice centre-backs. Ange Postecoglou used his bench well, and aside from the sloppy start and the goal conceded, it was a strong display from all 16 players involved. The win keeps Spurs 12th in the Premier League table, still four points behind Brentford after their latest victory.Next up: Manchester City at home on Wednesday. Spurs will aim to keep their unbeaten record against Manchester clubs this season.
