(Sean Simmers/The Patriot-News via AP)A police officer was killed and five others were injured when a man opened fire at a hospital in York County, Pennsylvania on Saturday morning, and took medical staff hostage.The gunman, identified by authorities as Diogenes Archangel Ortiz, attacked the UPMC Memorial in West Manchester Township. Two other officers received bullet injuries by the gunman but are said to be in stable condition. UPMC hospital said that no patients have been injured.At a press conference, York County District Attorney Tim Barker said that an intensive care unit (ICU) doctor, nurse and a custodian suffered injuries from the attackers gunshots while an employee got injured in a fall. (AP)How the shooting unfoldedGunman Diogenes Archangel Ortiz, 49, entered the UPMC Memorial hospital on Saturday morning at around 10:30am, carrying a bag which reportedly contained a semi-automatic handgun and zip ties.The suspect moved to the ICU section of the hospital and took several hospital staff hostage. Attorney Barker revealed that officers were preparing to confront the gunman at that point but he took an ICU employee hostage at gun point and asked police to back off.As and when the attacker, Ortiz, came out in the hallway with the hostage employee at gunpoint, the officers shot the suspect fatally and he was killed on the spot. The officer who was shot and died during the shootout was West York Borough Police Officer Andrew Duarte.
