According to the police, Fernandes and her family members had an altercation with the accused and his family on Friday night.A 23-year-old man from Delhi was arrested for allegedly running over a 65-year-old woman after an altercation with her and her family in North Goa’s Mandrem late Friday night. Police have registered a case of murder.Police said they received information that an accident occurred in Junaswada area under Mandrem police station’s jurisdiction, wherein a woman, identified as Maria Joao Fernandes, was injured by a speeding car. Fernandes, who sold coconuts, later succumbed to the injuries.Police said the accused, Deepan Batra (23), hails from Paschim Vihar in Delhi and has been staying in Goa since December 2023. According to the police, he has earlier worked as a chef in Dubai and currently has been working on a “self-funded film project”.According to the police, Fernandes and her family members had an altercation with the accused and his family on Friday night. A police officer said, “Both the families have dogs. They had some petty arguments over the issue of walking the dogs in the past few days. On Friday, when the accused and his parents were going for a walk, he got into an argument with the victim’s son, who objected to the former walking their dog close to their house. The argument escalated and some blows were exchanged. In the scuffle, people from both sides suffered injuries”.Police said after the fight, the accused sat in his car with his parents to go towards the beach, but “deliberately hit the victim while she was trying to place a chair outside her home”. After the incident, the accused drove to the Mandrem police station and surrendered. The car involved in the incident was seized and the car driver was arrested, police said.A police officer, requesting anonymity, said, “In preliminary interrogation, the accused said that after the fight, he was worried that the victim’s family would attack him with a coconut cutting tool. He claimed he ‘blanked out’ as he sat behind the wheel. A forensic examination of the scene of crime and the vehicle has been conducted.”An FIR under sections 103 (murder) and 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) of BNS 2023 has been registered, police said. © The Indian Express Pvt LtdTags:Panaji
