‘ED officer’, accomplice who tried to extort Rs 20 crore from Delhi businessman arrested after 4 months

(File image)The Delhi Police have arrested a man and his associate, for allegedly impersonating Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials in an attempt to extort Rs 20 crore from a businessman in South Delhi.The Crime Branch police identified one of the arrested as Iqbal Qureshi, a member of Prince Tewatia gang, and said he had masterminded the operation. Qureshi has over 30 cases against him, under several charges, including rape and Arms Act violations, the police said. The other arrested has been identified as Arun Lal.The accused were arrested from Delhi’s Khizrabad area on February 19 based on a tip off, said the police said.According to the police, on October 22, 2024, Qureshi and his six–member gang, posing as ED officers, allegedly barged into the farmhouse of the businessman in Mehrauli.“Under the guise of conducting a raid, they questioned the complainant about significant cash withdrawals from his bank account,” Sanjay Kumar Sain, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime), said.Threatening arrest, the “officers” demanded Rs 20 crore from the complainant to avoid arrest. Citing the huge amount, the businessman said that he had to visit the bank to facilitate the transaction, the police said.Five of the accused remained in the farmhouse overnight, while two of them accompanied the complainant to a bank in Hauz Khas. “Seizing the opportunity, the complainant alerted his manager and lawyer via WhatsApp, who confirmed with ED’s office that no such raid was authorised. When the complainant requested identification from one of the accused at the bank, the fraudsters grew suspicious and fled,” Sain said.Story continues below this adA team under ACP Naresh Solanki, and led by Inspector Vijay Pal Dahiya, traced a mobile number used during the attempted ‘raid’, and found that it was linked to Qureshi, the police said.Further investigation is underway to arrest the remaining accomplices, the police said.© The Indian Express Pvt Ltd
