Five things we learned from Tottenham’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester City

Wait 5 sec.

Tottenham Hotspur’s three-win streak in the Premier League came to an end this evening as Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City recorded a rare victory in N17.Let’s take a look at the five things we learned from Tottenham 0-1 Man City:Resting for AZ AlkmaarWhether Ange Postecoglou wanted to rest a few key players for the Europa League next week or whether he thought those three players simply needed a rest either way, who knows. Whatever the case, Heung-min Son, Djed Spence, and Dejan Kulusevski seem certain starters against AZ Alkmaar next Thursday and will not be all the fresher for it.Of course, Tottenham still want to do well in the Premier League and compete against the top teams, but most fans won’t lose any sleep over a 1-0 defeat to Man City if Spurs win in Europe. It also afforded Postecoglou the chance to get some much-needed minutes into the legs of Wilson Odobert, Brennan Johnson, Destiny Udogie, and James Maddison.Quadruple change from the Tottenham benchDuring the height of the injury crisis, Postecoglou was barely making four changes in a month, let alone a minute! With Spurs upping their game in the second half and chasing an equaliser, Ange finally had the luxury of turning to his bench and seeing world-class talent to call on. Heung-min Son, Dejan Kulusevski, Pape Matar Sarr, and Djed Spence all came on as a quadruple change with half an hour to go and Spurs looked really fresh after the substitutions. Postecoglou’s team has been built around relentless pressing and superior fitness, which really showed in the final 25 minutes, even if Spurs were a little toothless in attack today. With all these players back, results should be more consistent from here on out.Photo by Alex Pantling/Getty ImagesDjed Spence should be first choice from now onYou could tell by the reaction online when the team news dropped today that Spurs fans were not happy about Djed Spence’s absence. Originally, he was only supposed to be filling a gap until Destiny Udogie returned. In reality, he has made the inverted full-back role his own to such a standard that he feels undroppable now. Even after coming off the bench today, Spence was one of Tottenham’s best performers. It is going to be very interesting to see what first-choice duo Ange settles on eventually, seeing as Spence can play on either side. Whatever the case, Pedro Porro and Udogie are not safe in the starting XI and that is a great thing for squad levels at Tottenham. What to do with Rodrigo BentancurThis week, reports emerged that Tottenham are in new contract talks with Rodrigo Bentancur, which was met with diverse opinions from the Spurs fanbase. Once again, we saw the best and the worst of the Uruguayan in midfield today. At his best, he can control the tempo like no other in the Tottenham squad. At his worst, he is often accused of ball-watching and being a little lazy off the ball in his defensive duties. You get the feeling that Tottenham don’t need Bergvall and Bentancur in that three-man midfield. What they need, is one deep-lying creator and one defensive monster, the latter of which Postecoglou simply does not have at his disposal. If Bentancur does sign a new deal, it will be interesting to see whether he eventually settles as a regular starter or a rotation player.READ MORE – Tottenham fans name six players who need new contracts after Rodrigo Bentancur talks emergeWilson Odobert back in the Tottenham XIIt felt like a second full debut of sorts for Wilson Odobert – seeing how long he has been out injured. The young Frenchman looked bright in attack at times, albeit a little too dependent on cutting inside rather than taking his defender to the byline. If he can forge some kind of partnership with his friend Mathys Tel, Spurs will be all the better for it over the coming weeks and months. He still looks like a very raw talent, but Tottenham arguably don’t have another winger who consistently takes people on and drives at the back four, even if he ends up doing it more off the bench than from the starting XI.READ MORE – Tottenham player ratings vs Man City – 7/10 star the silver lining in defeatThe post Five things we learned from Tottenham’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester City appeared first on Spurs Web.
