Woman, 19, dies and several others injured in Berbice accident

One person is dead and several others are injured following an accident on the Berbice River Bridge access road, Region Six on Wednesday.The deceased is Annalisa Smith, 19, of Lot 248 Hope, East Coast Demerara.Reports indicate that around 12:20 hrs, Khemchan Jairam, of Lot 91 Shieldstown, West Bank Berbice, was driving a motorcar (PSS 6725) with passengers Annalisa, Marlyn Jones, 60, and Odessa Smith, 49, all from Lot 248 Hope, East Coast Demerara, along with Simon Gomes, 43, of Lot 145, 5th Street, Albertown, Georgetown.They were reportedly traveling west in the southern drive lane at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with a Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) pole situated on the southern side of the road.As a result of the collision, Annalisa, who was seated in the rear left side of the car, sustained multiple injuries and was extracted from the vehicle in an unconscious state by bystanders. She was placed in an ambulance and transported to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where she was examined by Dr. Jhagru, who was on duty and pronounced her dead.The body is currently at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital Mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.The other occupants of the vehicle are receiving treatment at the New Amsterdam Hospital.A breathalyzer test was conducted, revealing that no alcohol was present in the driver’s system.
