Bengal Trolley Bag Murder: As police join dots, taxi drivers say mother-daughter duo behaved normal, showed no stress

As Kolkata Police is still trying to piece together the murder of a 50-year-old woman, whose body was found in a trolley bag as it was being disposed of in the Hooghly river by a mother-daughter duo, investigation so far has revealed that the accused behaved completely normal and did not look nervous at all as they switched vehicles from their Madhyagram home in North 24 Parganas to Kumartuli Ghat in Kolkata.Also, according to the police, the woman was killed between 4 to 5 pm on Sunday after her head was bashed against a wall several times.  “The body remained in the rented flats of Aarti Ghosh, 55, and Falguni Ghosh, 34, in Madhyamgram for over 40 hours before they decided to dispose of it. The mother and daughter tried to stuff the body into the trolley bag, but it was not fitting. So, they cut her legs and dumped them in a nearby pond,” a police officer involved in the probe said.As per the sequence of events, concluded by the investigators, the two women called a van to their residence on Tuesday morning around 5.30 am. The two women wore masks.The van driver, who took them to Doltala near Madhyamgram for Rs 130, told police that he did not notice anything unusual and the two women didn’t look nervous or tense.   From Doltala, the women then hired a taxi to Kumartuli Ghat , a distance of 17 km, and paid the taxi driver Rs 600. “The heavy bag didn’t bother me much because they looked very normal. I fetch airport passengers most of the time and they all carry heavy luggage. So, it didn’t catch my attention,” said the taxi driver.On Tuesday night, a team of Kolkata police accompanied by forensic experts reached the Madhyamgram flat of the accused and carried out a thorough search. “Approximately 20 items were seized as evidence,” a police officer said. “The investigation is ongoing. We are piecing together the timeline and the motive behind this gruesome crime,” said another officer.On Tuesday morning, people at Kumartuli Ghat caught the two women after they spotted blood stains on the trolley bag, which they struggled to move. Police arrested them after the body of a woman was found inside the bag. The body was identified as Sumita Ghosh (50), sister of Falguni’s father-in-law.  Police said that Sumita had come to Aarati’s Madhyamgram house a few days ago. While Aarati works as a house help, Falguni is separated from her husband, a resident of Jorhat in Assam. Meanwhile, the two accused were produced at a court in Kolkata on Wednesday and were remanded to one-day police custody. Since the murder took place in Madhyamgram, the court ordered the Barasat Police to take over the investigation.“The accused will be produced at a court in Barasat on Thursday,” the officer said.© The Indian Express Pvt LtdTags:Kolkata
