‘Didn’t coach good enough’ – Jason Kelce addresses claims Andy Reid should quit Chiefs over Super Bowl meltdown

Wait 5 sec.

It doesn’t take long to go from hero to zero.Andy Reid came into the 2024 season as the NFL‘s best-paid coach on $20million per season having inspired back-to-back Super Bowl triumphs with the Kansas City Chiefs.GettyThe Chiefs were powerless to stop the Eagles in New Orleans[/caption]After some early struggles, Patrick Mahomes hit his stride in the postseason despite a wobbly offensive line and as on the brink of a three-peat.But Reid came unstuck at the final hurdle against the Philadelphia Eagles — a team he led for 14 seasons.Without bothering to blitz, the Eagles’ defensive line ripped Kansas City apart and Mahomes was helpless to prevent a 40-22 demolition — the scoreline flattering the Chiefs.FOX Sports radio host Rob Parker tore into Reid after the game.“Andy Reid should step down as head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs,” he proclaimed. “And you’re going to be like, ‘They just went to the Super Bowl three times. Andy Reid blah, blah, blah.’ “This is not a one-game reaction because they lost in the Super Bowl, and they got boat-raced — it was 40-6.“Where were the adjustments? Where was the game plan? I’m not a football coach. “Guys who were football coaches and players questioned the game plan — no running game to start at all. And then you get behind, and then you gotta pass.”Reid has led his team to the Super Bowl in the last five seasons and has three rings to show for it but admitted he didn’t do a good job against his former team.“Today was a rough day,” he said in the wake of a brutal loss. “We didn’t really play well in any of the phases. I’m proud of our guys, though, for the battle, the fight that they put in throughout the year, and all the games that they played here over the last few years.“We’ll learn from this. Like most games here, when you don’t do very well, you learn from it as a coach, you learn from it as a player, and you move on.”Legendary Eagles center Jason Kelce played under Reid in Philadelphia and defended his former coach.“If they’re getting home with four, it’s going to be hard,” he told Ernie Johnson and Charles Barkley on ‘The Steam Room.’“They were so dominant up front – Philadelphia in that game. You can go to boots and play action to try and throw them off their pass rush, but when you’re not successful on first or second down and getting into conducive situations on third down, it will be really hard.“I think there are always things you look back on that could have been done better.“I don’t know if Andy could have done much, to be honest with you. I think that was a team that very evidently needs to improve that position this offseason.” The offensive line is set for a revamp over the offseason after well-documented struggles in keeping Mahomes clean.Parker thinks Reid is struggling to get the best out of his quarterback.“This is what he did in Philadelphia all the time –- pass happy. Always throwing the ball, they got tired of that in Philadelphia,” he added. “This fall off the cliff is two years in the making.“Last year, they won the Super Bowl, so it covered up how bad things were. You remember with the receivers, and the struggles, and Patrick Mahomes. Here’s another year. Andy Reid is supposed to be an offensive genius. “Why is Patrick Mahomes struggling so much when you can’t figure out a way to get him off and to get him to be not 50 touchdowns and throwing every ball downfield but way better? Can you admit Patrick Mahomes hasn’t been the same quarterback the last two years? “Andy Reid is supposed to be that guy, and yet, we haven’t seen it. It’s been a nice run. The last two years have been disappointing regular seasons. Yes, they went to the Super Bowl. Yes, [they] won both those times. I’m not talking about the last two years. And this year, they got embarrassed.“The offence isn’t where it used to be. It’s taken two steps back; that’s all I’m saying. How about somebody else who’s got some other ideas?”Reid is extremely unlikely to pay much heed to Parker’s blast but one key Chief may not be returning as Jason’s brother Travis weighs up retirement. If he does decide to call it a day, there will be plenty of question marks over the Chiefs’ offense ahead of the new season.Reid is paid the big bucks to provide the answers.
