49ers Rumors: Robert Saleh Fixes GM John Lynch’s Mess as Dre Greenlaw Finds Support in New DC

Wait 5 sec.

Robert Saleh wants Dre Greenlaw on the team. The ex-Jets coach isn’t messing around with his not-so-new team, the Niners. After getting fired by the Jets, Saleh is fully focused on San Francisco. For him, returning as the Niners’ DC feels like a homecoming after parting ways with them in 2021 to become the Jets’ head coach. Now that Saleh is back with San Francisco for a second stint, he knows exactly which players the team needs. And the DC is hell-bent on keeping them in the squad. So, even with trouble at the LB depth, Niners GM John Lynch announced to reporters in Indianapolis that they would let LB Dre Greenlaw test free agency. But now, Robert Saleh is here to clean up Lynch’s mess. As per The Athletic’s Matt Barrows, the Niners’ DC has been constantly keeping in touch with Greenlaw, making it clear that he’s a crucial piece of the squad. “DC Robert Saleh has reportedly been putting on a ‘full-court press’ and making calls to Dre Greenlaw, telling him he wants him to come back.”#49ers DC Robert Saleh has reportedly been putting on a “full-court press” and making calls to Dre Greenlaw telling him he wants him to come back, per @mattbarrowsH/T @Coach_Yac pic.twitter.com/T0IASVUp4B— OurSF49ers (@OurSf49ers) February 28, 2025The Niners have had a nightmare-ish season this year, barely scraping together six wins. Some of their key players dealt with injuries. Dre too was activated for a short period of 14 days in December before being put off the gridiron again. The LB was healing from the torn Achilles surgery he had after the previous season. Then, their top RB, Christian McCaffrey, also had to miss out on a lot of action this season. McCaffrey was struggling with a calf and Achilles injury sustained during the preseason. And so, because of Dre’s injury struggles, the Niners might be having a hard time offering him a contract extension. Dre has been with the team for six seasons now. And honestly, there aren’t many good options at LB other than him. And whether they will be looking for an LB in the draft can’t be said yet. But considering how limited the options are, it makes sense why Saleh wants to retain Greenlaw for the team’s defensive lineup. Is John Lynch unsure about Dre Greenlaw? The offseason kind of turns into a battlefield of negotiations every year. It becomes such a headache for the front office and the guys looking at the finances of the team. Teams have to make sure to keep their best soldiers in the squad while also managing salary cap crunches. The situation with the Niners here is that if they let go of Dre, their LB depth will hit rock bottom. So, John Lynch saying, “Dre should go out and see what’s out there,” could make the team miserable if he does find a new team.Although Lynch did clarify at the NFL Scouting Combine that the Niners are trying to keep Dre on the team. “We know how highly we think of Dre. We’d love to have him back.” John also hinted that the team might retain him before he steps into free agency. The two parties are having talks and will try to negotiate a deal that works best for both Dre and the Niners. “Hopefully, we’ll come to an agreement. We’ve been having talks. So hopefully we can prevent him from testing free agency.“The rumors were also that San Francisco might sign Chiefs‘ Nick Bolton to replace Dre. The Chiefs star will be a free agent this year after his four-year deal with the team comes to an end. But then again, the question is whether Kansas City is ready to let Bolton hit the free agency market. Bolton’s name has been linked to Tom Brady‘s Raiders. Well, for now, these are just rumors flying around like confetti. But all in all, it’s just a busy offseason for all 32 franchises. The post 49ers Rumors: Robert Saleh Fixes GM John Lynch’s Mess as Dre Greenlaw Finds Support in New DC appeared first on EssentiallySports.
