The city has registered 2,949 pet dogs, the popular breeds being Labrador and German Shepherd, as part of an Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) drive following a Supreme Court directive on stray dogs.Of the total dogs registered, west Ahmedabad led at 760, which belong to 666 owners, with some owning multiple pets, as per data provided by the AMC. Siberian Huskies were only registered in this zone, which covers the areas of Motera, Naranpura, Usmanpura, Law Garden, IIMA, Vasna, etc. At 92, the central zone, which covers the walled city area, had the least number of registered dogs — owned by 87 people.The AMC began the registration of pet dogs on January 1 this year, after the apex court upheld the provisions of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 and the Animal Birth Control (ABC) rules 2023, which prohibit the indiscriminate killing of stray dogs to prevent rabies.The corporation has received a strong response, with 2,605 pet owners registering a total of 2,949 dogs across the city till Thursday. March 31 is the deadline for registration.Among the exotic breeds, pugs were only registered in the south zone, while Shih Tzus were registered in north and south-west zones.The northwest zone, which covers Kaligam, Subhash Chowk, and Gurukul Road, had the second highest figures, with 617 pet owners and 684 pets registered.Story continues below this adThe southwest zone, covering Vastrapur Railway Station, the posh SoBo Center Ward, and Fatewadi, had 446 pet owners registering 535 dogs.While 286 pet owners got 321 dogs registered in the south zone (Ghodasar, Cadila, CTM, Vastral), 172 owners got 195 dogs registered inthe north zone (Saraspur Gam, Nava Naroda, Nava Nikol), and 313 pet owners got 340 dogs registered in the East Zone (Gomtipur Gam, Mahadevnagar, Odhav Gam Ward).Dog owners in Ahmedabad can register their pets online on AMC’s official website (https://ahmedabadcity.gov.in) or call on the AMC helpline 079-25359650. The registration process requires filling in their details, uploading necessary documents, and paying a ₹200 registration fee.
