‘Do the most things the best’Why Colorado Buffaloes superstar Travis Hunter is the perfect number one overall pick

Wait 5 sec.

It is almost always a quarterback, now more than ever. But what if, rather than the game’s most important position, it was a player who can play two positions equally well – better than well in fact – who was the first overall pick in the NFL Draft.Travis Hunter was the best player in college football last seasonIn a draft where there isn’t a consensus number one prospect – yet -the door is ajar for the best player available to be taken first overall. Step forward, Travis Hunter. The Heisman Trophy winner, All-American superstar, who does it on both sides of the ball.In this year’s class he might be the BPA, and it might not be particularly close.History tells us that more likely than not a quarterback will go first overall – eight out of the last ten number one draft picks have all been quarterbacks. From Jameis Winston, Jared Goff, Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and Joe Burrow to most recently Trevor Lawrence, Bryce Young and Caleb Williams. It’s a quarterback’s game. The Tennessee Titans own the number one pick, and are in desperate need of competent quarterback play.Several other teams, notably the New York Giants and the Las Vegas Raiders, are also in the market for a quarterback. But what happens when there isn’t a Burrow or Lawrence on the board?Insert a generational defensive talent – Myles Garrett. Or insert an athletic phenom with traits but little production – Travon Walker. In this year’s case, insert Hunter.Hunter had 16 total touchdowns in 2024Hunter spoke at the combine and didn’t shy away from the fact that he wants to play on both sides of the ball at the next levelGettyNo offense to Cam Ward or coincidentally enough, Hunter’s teammate, Shedeur Sanders, but they’re no John Elway or Andrew Luck. All very talented, but no sure thing. No one is, but Hunter might be the closest thing in this year’s draft.“If a team needs a quarterback and are picking between Cam Ward and Shedeur it’s because that is what they need,” Jake Crain told the latest episode of talkSPORT Rundown.“But If I am looking  at somebody to hire, I want to hire the guy that can do the most things the best and that is what Travis Hunter is.”The No. 1 overall prospect in the Class of 2022 burst onto the scene two seasons ago after following head coach Deion Sanders and quarterback Shedeur from Jackson State to Boulder, Colorado. The All-American talent arrived as a shutdown cornerback, while moonlighting as an electric wide receiver. Excelling at both. Fairly easily. He finished his last season at Colorado with 96 catches for 1,258 yards and 16 total touchdowns, on top of four interceptions, 35 tackles, 11 pass break ups and one forced fumble. He played 688 defensive snaps and 672 on offense. Simply unheard of.Hunter is a two-way talent that the NFL hasn’t seen in the modern era.“He is a rarity in that we have seen guys play both ways,” Crain added.“But not to this level and not being this effective. We will see what happens at the NFL level as I think there is a better chance he play wide receiver. “If I want to go get the best player that can provide me with the most avenues for them to have the success and then in turn us to have success I think Travis Hunter is going to be that guy.”Hunter spoke at the scouting combine in Indianapolis and made his feelings clear on what he wants to do at the next level. And that’s play both sides.“They say nobody has ever done it, for real, the way I do it, but I tell them I’m just different. I’m a different person,” Hunter said.“I’ve been doing it for a long time, so I feel like I can keep doing it.”Scouts are projecting his ceiling to be higher as a cornerback at the next level because of his physical tools, elite ball skills and football IQ, but there’s no reason he can’t excel at both.Or at the very least be elite on one side of the ball, while still very good on the other. All that, for the price of one? That alone is worthy of the number one overall pick, especially in a draft where there isn’t that generational talent at quarterback. The generational talent in this year’s draft was lining up on both sides of the ball and could be found wearing number 12 in Boulder, Colorado.Catch up with the full episode of NFL Rundown on our dedicated YouTube channel, or by hitting play below
