Two-time Academy Award-winner Gene Hackman and his wife were found dead at their New Mexico home on Wednesday, the BBC reported, citing local police. The 95-year-old actor was discovered along with his spouse, pianist Betsy Arakawa, at their home on the outskirts of Santa Fe, and their dog. The cause of death was uncertain, the BBC and other media outlets reported. “This is an active investigation — however, at this time we do not believe that foul play was a factor,” the BBC reported, citing a statement from the Santa Fe County Sheriff.Hackman’s roles in Hollywood movies such as The French Connection and Unforgiven established him as one of America’s finest actors. Appearing in more than 80 feature films, he was almost as well-known for his intensely private demeanor as he was for his talent on the set.A self-described introvert with a troubled family background, Hackman often took on roles that belied his reserved manner, from the short-tempered narcotics detective Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle in 1971’s The French Connection, which won him his first Oscar, to the feisty FBI agent Rupert Anderson in Mississippi Burning in 1988.Admired by other actors, Hackman was adept at playing imposing characters capable of an intimidating grin in the most threatening situations. His role as Sheriff “Little Bill” Daggett in Unforgiven in 1992, for which he won his second Oscar, helped revive the Western film genre. Pitted against an aging gunslinger played by Clint Eastwood, Daggett taunted his enemies before fighting them. The film won four Oscars, including ones for best picture and Eastwood’s direction.Police representatives weren’t immediately available for comment outside normal hours.
