The future of XCOM remains unknown, but if the franchise does make a return, a veteran of the series would like to take a stab at it again. In a new interview, X-COM creator Julian Gollop revealed how he'd like to return to XCOM in some capacity if he was ever offered the chance to do so, and he was more than happy to still be affiliated with it after so many years."I am perfectly happy being known as the XCOM guy," Gollop said to Eurogamer. "I mean, it was a foundational game in my career, and probably also, in some ways, a foundational strategy game in strategy gaming at the time--even though not long after it came out, the real-time-strategy scene really took over."Gollop jokingly mentioned that he was "still waiting" for a call from Firaxis boss Sid Meier to come work on a new X-COM game, and currently, he is working on a real-time action-strategy title called Chip 'n Clawz vs. the Brainiods. While you'll need to gather resources and raise an army, the game also lets you venture onto the frontlines to do battle alongside your troops, and it is scheduled to be out later this year.XCOM has had a long history starting with UFO: Enemy Unknown--AKA X-COM: UFO Defense in other parts of the world--all the way back in 1994. The 2010s saw several games in the series released, with Firaxis' X-COM: Enemy Unknown and X-COM 2 being big critical hits. The most-recent games in the series include X-COM: Chimera Squad in 2020 and the free-to-play X-COM Legends in 2021.Meanwhile, Firaxis has kept busy with other game projects, like Marvel's Midnight Suns in 2022 and the recent release of Sid Meier's Civilization VII.
