The Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics will open its campus doors for the public as part of National Science Day celebrations on Friday (Archives)Several institutions in the city will celebrate National Science Day on Friday with a variety of public events. February 28 is observed as National Science Day to honour the ground-breaking discovery by noted scientist Sir C V Raman. Known as Raman Effect, the eminent scientist’s discovery was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1930, marking the first time an Indian scientist received this prestigious honour.The United Nations has declared 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ), and Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune, will feature a special talk on quantum technology by Prof Umakant Rapol. The event also includes interactive sessions with IISER scientists, a talk by Padma Shri awardee Arvind Gupta, live demonstrations of student and teacher projects and models, daytime astronomy observations, an interactive puzzle zone and a science quiz.The event will feature engaging talks on a wide range of topics such as molecular motors, astrobiology and the origin of life, the fascinating properties of water, artificial intelligence and the ongoing evolution of humans. Interactive science shows covering themes such as “It’s Not ‘Magic’… It’s Science,” “The Joy of Learning Science Through Experiments”, “The Science Behind Miracles”, and “Innovative and Fascinating Experiments in Science” will be held. The event will also showcase demonstrations of science models created by students, teachers and IISER Pune staff.Attendees can explore presentations of activities designed by Indrani Balan Science Activity Centre and participate in an exciting science quiz on The Mysteries of the Universe, with attractive prizes to be won. IISER Pune in collaboration with Pimpri Chinchwad Science Park, will also celebrate National Science Day from February 27 to March 2, 2025, at the Kalpakghar community science centre located at the Pimpri Chinchwad Science Park. Kalpakghar is a collaborative STEM-tinkering project between IISER Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad Science Park and is funded by Tata Technologies Ltd under its Corporate Social Responsibilities initiative.Agharkar Research Institute will also observe National Science Day by organising a science exhibition. The gates will open at 10am. Visitors will get an opportunity to take part in various opportunities and know more about the megaprojects IUCAA is a part of. Visitors will also get to learn about recent exciting findings by IUCAA and associate scientists using various observatories.Back-to-back lectures in English and Marathi on topics like Psar Tayanchedarshanarch (Marathi) by Parisee Shirke and ‘Celebrating Quantum Entanglement and its Impact in Society’ by Anindita Banerjee, CDAC, Pune will be conducted from 10 am to 6 pm at the Chandrasekhar auditorium.Story continues below this adAstronomy models, live sunspot viewing, make your own flying planes, a special talk by Prof J V Narlikar are some of the other activities conducted throughout the day.
