DescriptionSince February 20, a rapid deterioration of the weather in West Georgia provoked the humanitarian crisis. Today, February 25, there are critical consequences of the bad weather. To this time and date, three people already lost their lives due to heavy snowfall.Heavy snowfall affected the Western part of Georgia, especially the Guria region. Many villages are cut off from the outside world, there is no electricity, water, and food supplies are running low. Locals can no longer to walk or move because the roads are covered with snow.In Chokhatauri municipality, in the villages of Buknari, Kvenobani, and Basileti, about 200 families are left without access to medicines and food, and they do not have the necessary equipment to clear snowy roads and get out of their houses. Snow cover in Nabeghlavi, Tavpanta, Kvabgha, and Chkhakoura reaches 3 meters. In the Gogole district, also in Khevi, Bzholieti, and Bukhieti, there are around 150 families including persons with disabilities, elderly who are alone, and socially vulnerable populations, also there are families with minor children who need food, hygiene, and medicines assistance. In all the 11 villages there is a delay in the supply of electricity and gas. The roof of one of the houses collapsed, which required the involvement of relevant agencies. The power supply is cut off, there is no way to communicate.There is a humanitarian crisis in 28 villages in Ozurgeti municipality. There is no electricity, water, food, and the roads are uncleaned. Day care centers are shut down, leaving beneficiaries without food. In the villages of Jumati, Konchati, Baileti, Zomleti and Kokati, the population cannot contact their relatives, and food supplies are running out. In several villages, the roofs of houses collapsed, leaving residents without housing. In the village of Silauri, young children and families need first aid medicines and food. Due to the snow cover, the ambulance cannot reach the population.Due to intense snowfall in Imereti, the educational process in schools and kindergartens is suspended in most of the municipalities. 42 rural roads are closed. Electricity is not supplied to 28,870 electricity users, special teams are working in this direction to restore the supply in a timely manner.Local authorities asked the Georgia Red Cross to help them with food, medicines, human resources, special equipment such as generators, heaters, gas burners and etc. Despite the fact that the weather in West Georgia got worse since February 20, today, February 25, there are critical consequences of the bad weather. Thus, today, the Georgia Red Cross has been receiving the calls on hotline since early morning, and people ask for food, medicines, and evacuation. Also, due to the lack of electricity, Georgia Red Cross can’t reach out to families.The main needs are food, medicines, candles (which are in short supply in the region), heavy equipment for cleaning the roads, fuel, heaters, alternative energy sources (generators and powerbanks for mobile phones), hygiene products, gas burners, clothes and first aid kits. The number of people evacuated is increasing.National Environmental Agency (NEA) is announcing that more snowfall and worse weather conditions are expected in the coming days.
