KEY HIGHLIGHTSThe security situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has deteriorated rapidly as the March 23 Movement (M23) armed group seized Goma and Bukavu as of 18 February. The un estimates that nearly a million people have been displaced in Goma since the start of the year.IDP camps continue to be evacuated, destroyed, or abandoned, as people flee the insecurity. WFP has temporarily paused its operations in areas near and around the frontlines particularly in North Kivu and South Kivu.WFP is preparing for resumption of activities once conditions allow. WFP retains critical staff in place to be able to respond as soon as resources are available and security permits.Situation UpdateThe humanitarian situation in eastern DRC continues to worsen due to escalating violence. Heavy clashes between M23 and the Congolese armed forces (FARDC) have led to mass displacement including cross-border movement to neighboring countries including Rwanda, Republic of the Congo and Burundi. destruction of IDP camps. The situation is highly volatile, and people’s movements are very fluid, with severe consequences on the humanitarian needs. The ongoing insecurity has also triggered civil unrest, looting, and disruption of humanitarian supply chains.Food security assessments indicate that nearly three-quarters of Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in Goma have an inadequate diet. The proportion of households with poor food consumption has surged from 13 percent in December 2024 to 71 percent in February 2025. With limited income or livelihoods, most IDPs are resorting to begging, heightening protection risks. Over 80 percent of those interviewed reported losing their food supplies due to the ongoing conflict.WFP is working closely with UN agencies, NGOs, and government partners to address immediate needs and prepare for a potential large-scale response.
