National Analyst’s Surreal Garrett Nussmeier Admission Could Save Brian Kelly’s Job Amid Recruitment Panic

Wait 5 sec.

Brian Kelly came to LSU with all pomp and show. There were expectations touching the roof, the roster started improving, and Kelly laid his foundations at LSU in the 2022 season. Come the 2023 season, the Tigers finished with a 10-3 record, and things started improving even more. Then came the 2024 season. Brian Kelly had everything figured out, from players to strategies to staff improvements. It all came crashing down when the season ended at 8-4. Questions started to get raised. After all, how many seasons does a coach need to lay his foundations and deliver the expected results? And when that team is someone like LSU, you better fix the roof before it starts leaking. Brian Kelly may not have delivered the results, but he does have something akin to a winning team in the 2025 season.JD Pickell of On3 Sports was talking about Garrett Nussmeier and how the QB has everything Brian Kelly needs to win some silverware in the 2025 season. “It’s impressive they (LSU) won eight games last year with how bad they were running the football. It’s impressive because of what Garrett Nussmeier just did. So when you look to why there’s optimism around for LSU…”“…I set at the top, man. Get pumped; you try not to set yourself up for disappointment. I’m telling you the opposite, man, do not drink the Kool-Aid responsibly. Chug that thing, man; whatever you got in the fridge, have all of it. Why? Because of who you got at quarterback.” While Garrett Nussmeier may have looked a bit weak in certain games last year, there is something exciting about him this season.Garrett Nussmeier had a 64.2% pass completion rate last year on 4,052 yards gained. Furthermore, he was easily in the top ten QBs in college football last year, which is still an achievement for him. But let’s look a bit beyond numbers. Garrett Nussmeier is, first and foremost, an LSU homegrown QB and is coming for his senior season on the back of 4,052 passing yards. That will make him one of the best-experienced QBs around in college football. Wait, there’s more.Nussmeier didn’t run, maybe because of strategies or maybe because he wasn’t just forced to do that. So, if Brian Kelly can utilize the QB more than just being in the pocket, he can be a dual threat for the defenses. This is a great plus for LSU since they had a dreadful run game last year, too. JD Pickell also highlighted why Nussmeier’s experience will be crucial for their success.Brian Kelly in panic mode for his new WR addition?“Look at last year what it took teams to win at the highest level it was experience at the QB position. I mean, all the teams in the semi-finals: Will Howard, Drew Allar from Penn State, and Riley Leonard, and Notre Dame. All the teams in the semifinals had experienced starters at the QB position. LSU will now have that in Garett Nusmeier going into year 2.” Of course, he is right; last year, all top four teams in the CFP had QBs who were vastly experienced and had 2nd or 3rd seasons as starting QBs. Nussmeier will have just that in 2025. Surely, the future is bright for LSU, right?Well, yes. Furthermore, Brian Kelly is looking to capture another prospect in five-star WR Tristan Keys to supplement just that in the long run. He is a 2026 class prospect, so maybe Garrett Nussmeier may not share the field with him. But he is someone after whom Brian Kelly is pursuing very aggressively. However, there’s a catch.Currently, Tristan Keys has not openly said anything about LSU and has 5-6 schools chasing after him. Those are Texas A&M, Michigan, Tennessee, and Ole Miss, among others. He has his visit scheduled for this spring and summer at least two times to LSU. So, it has to be seen if Brian Kelly can successfully land the prospect or not.The post National Analyst’s Surreal Garrett Nussmeier Admission Could Save Brian Kelly’s Job Amid Recruitment Panic appeared first on EssentiallySports.
