The Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development has revealed that in December 2024, Uganda exported goods worth Shs2.634Trn with coffee, minerals and fish cited as the leading products to bring in the much-needed foreign exchange.The details are contained in the Monthly, Performance of Economy Report of January 2025 that was released last week by the Ministry of Finance.“On an annual basis, Uganda’s merchandise exports grew by 13.9 percent, from US$633.87 million (Shs 2,313,352,935,900) in December 2023 to US$721.93 million (Shs2.634Trn) in December 2024. This increase was primarily driven by higher export earnings from coffee, mineral products, sesame (simsim), fish and its products, among others,” as read in the report.The Ministry further indicated that the destination of exports during the month of December 2024, the Middle East remained Uganda’s largest export destination, with United Arab Emirates accounting for 98% of the exports to the region.At the regional level, the East African Community (EAC) was the second-largest destination, accounting for 27.2% of total exports, followed by the European Union (15.5 percent) and Asia (13.0 percent).Government indicated that within the EAC, Democratic Republic of Congo emerged as the largest importer of Uganda’s merchandise, taking up 37.3 percent (US$73.08 million) of the total exports.After DRC, Kenya followed at 24.6 percent (US$48.13 million) and South Sudan at 16.2 percent (US$31.79 million).   Meanwhile, the Ministry also revealed that Uganda spent US$1.052Bn (Shs3.839Trn) in December 2024 on importations with the volume of imports mainly driven by higher import volumes for vegetable & animal products, beverages, fats & oils; base metals and their products; plastics, rubber and related products; prepared foodstuffs, beverages, and tobacco, among others.On the destination of the exports, the Ministry revealed that most of the goods imported into the country in December 2024, came from Asia with the continent accounting for 37.4 percent of the total import bill.Within the region, China and India were the leading suppliers, contributing 50.8 percent and 21.0 percent of Uganda’s imports from Asia, respectively. Other notable sources of Uganda’s imports were EAC, Rest of Africa and Middle East, which accounted for 22.6 percent, 17.4 percent and 11.3 percent of the total imports, respectively.At the regional level, Tanzania and Kenya were the primary sources of Uganda’s imports, accounting for 69.8 percent and 26.1 percent of the imports from the region, respectively.The post Uganda Exported Goods Worth Shs2.6Trn In December 2024-Report appeared first on Business Focus.
