It’s been 6 months now since the Bay Area community lost a major legend. Alvin ‘Al’ Attles, one of the earliest big names of the Golden State Warriors franchise, breathed his last back in August 2024. His legacy was unlike any from the basketball community. After all, he carved a six-decade-long career with the Bay Area franchise, serving as a player, coach, and general manager. His long-term commitment allowed him to form a bond with Warriors stars of several generations, including the current one. Therefore, Stephen Curry paid tribute to him by recalling the experience he himself shared with the team legend.Stephen Curry recently uploaded a clip featuring behind-the-scenes footage from the recent All-Star Weekend. The same included the player’s speech during the Legends Brunch. The annual award ceremony also pays tribute to those basketball stars who created a lasting impact in the sport. Along with paying tribute to Bill Walton, Jerry West, and Dikembe Mutombo, Stephen Curry also used the occasion to say a few words about Attles. Referring to him as “Al”, the 3-point leader highlighted the 60 years of service that the former player gave to the Warriors. More than his impact on basketball, however, Curry cherished the influence he had on his personal life.“He welcomed me with open arms back in 2009, when I was drafted out here,” said Curry. “He showed me what it meant to have a true impact on and off the court and speak for those who can’t speak for themselves in the community. And his lasting impact will forever be felt every time I go into our practice facility at Chase Center. His name is on the practice floor, his picture is on the wall, and his impact on our organization and the entire Bay Area will be felt forever”.The speech didn’t mark the first tribute that Stephen Curry gave out to Attles. After the news of the 87-year-old’s passing became official, Curry took to social media. He highlighted a game-day photograph of when the Warriors won the Western Conference Championship back in 2015. Attles was in attendance and was seen shaking hands with Curry. The 36-year-old wrote a caption alongside the picture that read, “Very sad day for the whole Bay Area and all Warriors fans. Al Attles was a pioneer of professionalism, courage, competitiveness and blazed his own trail every step of the way. His DNA is all over this organization. Forever in our hearts and the rafters #16”. Steph pays tribute to Al Attles [via @StephenCurry30’s IG] pic.twitter.com/ME58yDjigM— Warriors on NBCS (@NBCSWarriors) August 21, 2024The late Warriors legend first established the foundation of his basketball career back in 1960. He joined the then-Philadelphia Warriors and played the entirety of his 11-year player career with them. Throughout 711 games, he averaged 8.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists. Attles created a reputation thanks to his defensive specialties. He even once punched a player in the jaw. If he did that today, he would have been suspended. However, in the 60s, his rough play earned him the moniker of ‘the Destroyer’.After his tenure as a player, coach, and general manager ended, Attles continued serving as a community relations representative. He continued dropping in during practice sessions, with both Stephen Curry and Steve Kerr more than happy to receive him. In fact, both the star player and coach kept paying tributes to #16. If you have been a longtime Warriors fan, you may remember Steve Kerr moving away from his usual closet to adorn a 70s look.Stephen Curry poked fun as Steve Kerr paid tribute to Al Attles with a 70s suit: “Draw on some chest hair”Back in June 2017, Al Attles became the recipient of the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award alongside Hubie Brown. Therefore, when the time came for the next NBA season to commence, it was time to honor the Warriors’ then-ambassador. Unfortunately, Attles was hospitalized in October due to unspecified reasons, just as the Warriors were set to commence the season. Still, this did not stop Steve Kerr from doing his thing.During the Warriors-Wizards game at Oracle Arena, Steve Kerr donned a 1970s-style suit to honor Al Attles. As he sat on the seats, a jumbotron highlighted the coach and a picture of a young Attles wearing the very same outfit. Steve Kerr acknowledged the resemblance but tried convincing the fans that he wore it better. Stephen Curry, who had found out earlier what Kerr had planned, said: “I think Steve got that out of the back of his closet. I think he already had that in there. There’s nothing special about it. I would probably just draw on some chest hair if you don’t”. Currey revealed intending to do that if Kerr wore the suit “like three or four buttons open, with the high peak collar”.Stephen Curry on Steve Kerr wearing 70’s style suit for tomorrow night’s game in honor of Al Attles. #Warriors(via @JDJohnDickinson) pic.twitter.com/6yiwOLcdbS— 95.7 The Game (@957thegame) October 26, 2017An individual like Alvin ‘Al’ Attles is not one to be easily forgotten.
