Ange Postecoglou has shed light on Tottenham’s reported attempts to tie down Rodrigo Bentancur to a new contract, with the Australian also setting the record straight on whether the midfielder is part of his long-term plans.Prior to Bentancur‘s ACL injury two years ago, he was well on his way to becoming one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, having become the man who made the Tottenham side tick under Antonio Conte. However, following a couple of serious injury setbacks and a lengthy suspension, the midfielder has struggled to recapture the same level of consistency he showed before his injury. It appears that Tottenham are reasonably pleased with the Uruguayan’s showing this season as it was reported earlier this week that Spurs have opened new contract talks with Rodrigo Bentancur.(Credit: Jo Min / onSpace collective)Ange Postecoglou wants to keep Rodrigo Bentancur at TottenhamPostecoglou has now admitted that the former Juventus man has had a difficult 18 months, owing to his setbacks, but suggested that the midfielder is now getting back to his previous levels. While the Australian did not provide too many details about the negotiations over a new deal, he made it clear that the 27-year-old remains an important player for Spurs. When asked about reports of Tottenham being in talks with Bentacnur over a new deal, Postecoglou told Football.London: “Rodri has been great. In terms of his contract situation, that’s handled by others and a lot of our strategizing is about long term. Rodri through the latter period has been getting back to levels he wants.“He’s come off a long-term injury and then came back and got another injury and then a false start with a long suspension. He just needs regular game time. He’s a good guy, experienced and will be important in the run-in.”Bentancur has been the best of a bad trio for SpursNone of Bentancur, Pape Sarr or Yves Bissouma have really stepped up in the way Postecoglou would have hoped this season, which has compounded the Australian’s issues. However, Bentancur has undoubtedly been the best of those three even though he has blown a little hot and cold this season. At his best, the experienced midfielder is a very useful option for Postecoglou, and the Spurs boss would want to keep him around as a squad player even if he does not envision him starting every game next season. The ironic reality is that Lucas Bergvall has been the best holding midfielder for Tottenham this season despite being just a teenager. The post Ange Postecoglou seems pleased by new contract talks coming out of Tottenham appeared first on Spurs Web.
