The family of Daphne Caruana Galizia responded to former prime minister Joseph Muscat’s offer to drop his libel against them, if they “accept the findings of the Bugeja [Egrant] inquiry report,” and denounce their mother’s work. After dropping a similar libel suit against lawyer Christian Grima yesterday, Muscat said he is willing to drop the second suit if Daphne’s family recognise the inquiry findings. The Daphne Foundation, led by the journalist’s son Matthew Caruana Galizia, responded to Muscat’s comments and reiterated its firm position made initially in 2019. “Joseph Muscat, Malta’s former prime minister who stands accused of serious financial crimes, said under oath in court that he will drop his and his wife’s libel case against Daphne’s family if they accept the findings of the Bugeja inquiry report,” the foundation wrote.“Muscat repeated his blackmail attempt today when questioned by the media about his unilateral withdrawal of an unrelated libel case.”“The 2019 response of Daphne’s family still stands: ’we will not concede to extortion by our public servants and our position on not accepting blackmail will never change,’” the statement concluded. What’s your take on this?•
