The Nationalist Party has once again got its narrative completely wrong. It is now trying to use the theft of 200kg of weed from an AFM barracks as an excuse to fearmonger about “drugs”.“I will be at the forefront of the war on drugs,” Bernard Grech pledged yesterday, echoing Roberta Metsola’s ridiculous warning that “200 kg of drugs are back on the streets”.Of course, there was no mention of how the PN plans to reignite that old war, which even the UN is now dismissing as a complete and utter failure. Will they shut down Malta’s cannabis social clubs? Will they ban people from growing weed indoors? Will they send the police back on the streets to hunt for joint-smokers and drag them through the justice system? But then again, it’s clearly not a serious policy but a meek attempt to jump on the bandwagon of a trending news item.A few days ago, Grech personally handed out a social justice award to activist Robert Louis Fenech for, among other issues, campaigning in favour of the cannabis reform law. That, coupled with the way the PN went completely quiet about the cannabis reform after its doom-mongering unsurprisingly turned out to be a load of hot air, appeared to be a positive step forwards in terms of the party’s approach to weed. But unfortunately it seems the PN still thinks it can invoke the old “droga” bogeyman when it suits them while not proposing stripping rights that could annoy large swathes of voters. It seems that they think people are stupid. And by focusing on the stolen weed, the PN is shifting focus away from the real problem – ie. that a significant theft occurred in what should be one of the most secure places in the country. How can someone smuggle so much weed out of an AFM barracks without anybody noticing? If the army has such lax security, what must the security be like in other national institutions? Those are the real problems, not that people might be able to consume a product from the black market that they can already grow and buy legally. But why even ask these questions when you can just try and scare people?•
