‘Fastest player ever’ – Patrick Mahomes’ Combine prediction proved right as Chiefs finally find Tyreek Hill replacement

Wait 5 sec.

Xavier Worthy almost fell out of the first round of the NFL Draft. Then a dynamic wide receiver with game-changing speed fell into the Kansas City Chiefs‘ arms.GettyXavier Worthy and Patrick Mahomes began their relationship at the 2024 NFL Combine[/caption]Twenty-seven players were drafted last season before Worthy’s name was taken off the board. When the receiver-needy Chiefs pounced at No. 28 in April 2024, Mahomes couldn’t contain his excitement. The three-time Super Bowl winner posted a smiling face with sunglasses emoji, as well as a sprinter emoji.Mahomes also retweeted new teammate Hollywood Brown’s post which read: “Ohh yeah we lit”.Worthy backed up his quarterback’s initial joy with a huge Super Bowl, catching all eight of his targets for 157 yards and two touchdowns during a 40-22 defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles on February 9.Mahomes and Chiefs supporters already knew during the 2024 draft that Kansas City had something special in a rookie who blazed through the combine’s 40-yard dash in 4.21 seconds. That 40 time marked a new combine record by barely edging John Ross by 0:01 seconds. “Rest of the NFL seeing the Chiefs getting the fastest player of all time,” one fan tweeted. “Game breaking speed coming to the kingdom,” a second fan wrote. “Andy Reid adding the fastest combine player ever to his offense,” posted another fan, along with a gif of Marvel villain Thanos adding an Infinity Stone.GettyWorthy recorded the fastest 40 time in NFL draft history[/caption]GettyHe was even more impressive in Super Bowl LIX[/caption]GettyThe 2024 draft set up the Chiefs for years to come[/caption]Making it even better for the Chiefs, they traded up to acquire Worthy — and agreed to the deal with the AFC rival Buffalo Bills. The 21-year-old wideout starred at Texas in college, which made Buffalo’s willingness to give up the 28th pick even odder.Worthy caught 197 passes for 2,755 yards and 26 touchdowns with the Longhorns. With the Chiefs, he played in all 17 games (13 starts) and totaled 59 catches for 638 yards and six TDs.Worthy was even better in the playoffs, catching at least six balls in all three of the Chiefs’ games and averaging 15.1 yards per reception. The player with the fastest 40 time in NFL Combine history added his name to the record book again in the big game. Worthy’s 157 receiving yards in Super Bowl LIX set a rookie record. The 5ft 11in and 165lb speedster said before the draft that the Chiefs would be ‘perfect’ for him, referencing how Tyreek Hill bonded with Mahomes on the field. Then Worthy kept connecting with Mahomes in 2024, giving the Chiefs a huge new offensive weapon that could keep Kansas City near the top of the AFC for years to come. “Man, I’m coming with the mentality to work hard and earn my spot in the locker room,” Worthy said after joining the Chiefs. “I feel like I’m a complete receiver. I can run the whole route tree, disciplined, smart, know the game very well, so I feel like I’m bringing a complete receiver to Kansas City.”He was right, and so was Mahomes. And there’s a legitimate chance this season the Chiefs could still have Travis Kelce and Worthy on the same team aiming for Super Bowl revenge.
