(File Photo)The Cyber Cell of the Delhi Police Crime Branch arrested a Rajasthan native for allegedly posing as a YouTube employee named Rahul Sharma and blackmailing people by threatening to release their sexually explicit videos on the platform, the police said Tuesday.The accused has been identified as Sahid, 27, who hails from Bharatpur. A non-bailable warrant was issued against him in connection with the case registered in 2022.According to the police, Sahid also posed as Inspector Surender from the Delhi Police Crime Branch to further intimidate some victims. He has allegedly blackmailed hundreds after recording their explicit videos through WhatsApp video calls.Also Read | Unani practitioner shot dead by minors last year over fee dispute: Delhi PoliceAs per a complaint received by the cyber cell, in November 2022, the complainant received a call from a person claiming to be a YouTube employee. He said that he possessed an objectionable video of the complainant and demanded money to prevent its release. The victim initially transferred Rs 3.61 lakh to various bank accounts. However, the extortion continued, and the complainant was coerced into paying an additional Rs 25 lakh over multiple transactions.Aditya Gautam, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Cyber Cell Crime, said, “Investigations revealed that ‘Rahul Sharma’ was acting as an agent of one Sandeep Aggarwal who was arrested earlier and had orchestrated an extortion scheme along with others.”Using a combination of technical and ground surveillance, the police followed Sahid movements across multiple locations, including Nuh in Haryana and Bharatpur in Rajasthan. Orphaned at a young age, he married in 2009 and struggled to support his wife and five children through farming. In 2022, he was introduced to a sextortion network led by one Mazid, through an acquaintance named Wasim,” the DCP said.“Sahid joined the gang and began posing as different people to carry out cyber fraud and extortion schemes. His arrest is expected to lead to the dismantling of a larger network of cyber criminals,” DCP Gautam added.
